A really good mascara

Does anyone remember Sweepers mascara by Yardley.
I used it in the 70s. It was a fabulous mascara. Went on like a dream, gave you incredibly long eyelashes, and never clumped.
Unfortunately it’s been discontinued so can anyone who recalls it recommend a mascara that does the same job.
I’m getting fed up of inferior mascara that claims to give a false eyelash effect but falls short of delivering.
So if you actually remember Sweepers and is using one that does what it says on the label I’d be grateful for your recommendations.
I’ve tried false eyelashes but can never get them right.

HippyChick, just pay for extensions and you will never need mascara sludge again.

DevonshireSalop you’ve sold the Essence one to me. I’m going to be 69 next month and my eyelashes ain’t wot they used to be
Although I always wear eyeliner mostly without mascara I sometimes need a bit more definition.
There were a few different effects in this line and I’ve ordered the green one which is coming later today. At this price I can afford to try them all.
Thanks for your recommendations everyone and as well as the Essence one, later on I’m going to try some of the more expensive ones. I may ask my DD to get one for my birthday.
… oh and a bonus is that it’s vegan and cruelty free which is what I wanted as well.

I use Sweed Cloud mascara. It gives you lovely lashes.

I use UK lash serum it works for me and best for me are Clinique mascara but better Maybelline Sky high cheaper than Clinique and prefer the thinner brush

Aah, now I know which mascara to try. I have eyes that water when moisturiser, or certain make up gets above my cheek bones…

For a budget mascara, but a great effect, I’ve found no better than Essence's Lash Princess False Lash Effect Mascara.
It does have quite a large brush though. If I have no mascara on then you’d think I have no eyelashes, I’m 69 and my mother asked if I was wearing false lashes 😂 . Several online outlets sell it along with all the usual shops. Apparently it’s become a hit with celebrity make up artists. At nearer to £3 than 4 I’m not surprised !

Have never found anything better than Max Factor 2000 calorie.

I agree with you GardenofEngland and Musky17, Benefit tinted primer is a great product. It works well and looks natural.

Benefit - They're Real, love Benefit mascara!!

MollyNew I love Maybeline Sky High is brilliant, also Mac do a really good one

Tessa1234 Tue 17-Mar-26 16:58:07

Avon lash genius is good and reasonably priced on Amazon

Musky17 Tue 17-Mar-26 16:56:52

Like GardenofEngland I too only use Benefit tinted primer on its own. It doesn’t make my eyes sting like so many others I’ve tried and does look more natural. Benefit in John Lewis told me it’s been discontinued ( not true) so I buy online directly from Benefit.

I love benefit tinted primer. It's supposed to be used under mascara but I use it on it's own it covers well but with a more natural look.

I recently found E.l.f after my favorite cheap as chips Boots own was discontinued. E.L.f was recommended in Style magazine Sunday Times and its fab. No flaking or Panda eyes and comes in brown or black at a very reasonable price, Superdrug. Good luck

I use Benefit They're Real! Brilliant mascara.

I found that to be the worst ever, it clotted and clumped none stop, then dropped off on my cheeks.
I did get my money refunded but would never recommend that one. I used to like Clinique but even that one clots now. I shall be following

I have a lovely Chanel one that DD bought me for Christmas, and can also recommend the ELF tubing mascara; neither of them smudge which I have always found a problem with most mascaras.

Lancôme Monsieur Big Waterproof - literally the only mascara I have found that doesn’t give me panda eyes !!

Glenfinnan

I usually wear a waterproof mascara because I find others ‘run’ on me. I like a thin brush … so watching this post with interest!

You might prefer a tubing mascara, they tend to be more smudge proof. No7 is quite good.

MollyNew Tue 17-Mar-26 15:54:42

Benefit are also very good. I don't like the Roller lash in the pink packaging but the others are very good. They do travel sizes so you could try a small one before splashing out £20+ on a full size. Good luck!

Cambia Tue 17-Mar-26 15:49:48

Lancôme Hypnose . Took me ages to justify buying a mascara this expensive but unfortunately I now won’t buy anything else!

Mouse Tue 17-Mar-26 15:13:48

I recently tried Maybelline the COLOSSAL and it really does live up to its name. Long, dramatic eyelashes from the first stroke.

HiPpyChick57 Tue 17-Mar-26 15:13:37

Thanks for your suggestions. I’ll have to try them one by one as and when I can afford it.
MollyNew I have tried Rimmel, Max Factor, Collection, Avon, Maybelline and various others that I can’t remember. Some expensive and some cheap. The trouble is that Sweepers was such an excellent mascara that nothing I’ve tried comes close. It was expensive then but worth it. I live in hope that I’ll find one eventually.

AuntieE Tue 17-Mar-26 14:47:59

Lancôme or Clinique.

I have tried so many, including expensive brands, that claim to be non flaky, smudge proof and enhancing length etc
I have yet to find one that lives up to their claims!
