Why do some foods become fashionable?

Who decides which foods will become 'trendy'
Avocado's on toast. Green, oily and a bit slimy mush on toast, give me a ripe vine tomato a bit of garlic salt and a drizzle of olive oil any day or even some farmhouse cheddar on toast with a smear of mustard.
Prosciutto ham, wafer thin and a bit chewy. I prefer a slice of ham on the bone from the deli.
Blueberries , big, black and juicy but don't have anywhere near the flavour of English strawberries, Scottish raspberries or a ripe peach.
Kiwi fruit, they look good sliced but does anyone enjoy all the little black seeds?
Pomegranates. As a child picking away with a blunt pin I always wondered why they were a treat, still do!
We have so many under used, under promoted fruits in this country. Rhubarb, Victoria plums, blackcurrants, gooseberries and whatever happened to bilberries now they were tasty.

Mashed or sliced avocado, with a squeeze of lemon, and a sprinkle of chili flakes, on thick buttery dough dough toast is my absolute favourite breakfast and to make it a special brunch I add a poached or scrambled egg and smoked salmon, with ground black pepper.

Yummy!

Absolutely delicious 👍🏻

I used to pick bilberries up in Lancashire, nothing like a bilberry/winberry pie.

Today however I am currently making a butter chicken curry, spinach, lentil and coconut dhal, carrot, coconut andchilli salad.

Tomorrow are the naan breads, bhajis and raita, my lovely husband made the mango chutney last week.

We have friends over for supper tomorrow so it’s obvs curry night!

All the doors in the house are open!

You’ve made my mouth water!! Enjoy

I honestly think, who really cares, I’ll try new foods, if I like the look and smell of them, without having moved on from the days of only home grown British food (nothing wrong with those things), we’d still have fairly restrictive and (dare I say it) pretty boring diets.

We love all different kinds of Asian, Spanish, Turkish and British foods, and curly kale was one of my DH staples way back in the day.

The Chefs (for example Ferràn Adrià for example) set the pace here in Spain and of course there are the seasons which play a strong role ..

Asian influences are quite influential at this time.

Clever marketing, playing to peoples’ snobberies and FOMO.

Always thought avocado was like wax.

Sorry, I don’t agree! I also use avocado in salad, as did my DM, I just couldn’t eat something purely because it’s “fashionable”, I eat what I enjoy.

I love avocado, you don’t, I loathe tomatoes, you love them. Each to their own flowers

We have masses of bilberries near us. You need to go quite high up the mountain but they grow there in abundance. Delicious

To be fair - sometimes ‘trendy’ foods can be related to health research. So avocados are good for you, similarly wholewheat or sourdough bread, so these foods are promoted. Ditto blueberries and kiwi fruits ( good for constipation).

They're fairly run-of-the mill now chez nous.

However, acai berries, matcha tea, Kimchi, spirulina, kale etc etc only appear in the kitchen when the DD are visiting the😁

Now pomegranates I love. I use loads in the summer sprinkled on salads and coronation chicken. They are so jewel like and juicy.

NoodleNut Thu 19-Mar-26 19:30:30

Romilo-
I am soooooo with you with the pomegranates!

Witzend Thu 19-Mar-26 19:29:55

I often think that if Brussels Sprouts had only just been discovered, and of course given a fancy foreign name - perhaps Spruti di Brucello - they would instantly become the latest fashionable ‘superfood’.
(And of course would cost 2-3 times what they cost now…)

^Oh, and matcha this, matcha that...^
and bubble tea!

I forgot about that - maybe because I've never had it. Holds no appeal for me at all.

It's often down to 'influencers' of one sort of another. What does annoy me slightly is that once something like that catches on, suddenly it's everywhere. Not so long ago, everything was salted caramel, then we had the Dubai chocolate trend and now it seems to be hot honey on everything. Oh, and matcha this, matcha that...grin

To address the foods you listed ROMILO:

Love avocado but not on toast and sliced never mashed.
Also not fond of prosciutto but love ham off the bone.
Love all the fruits you listed including the black seeds of kiwi grin and pomegranate is one of my favourites. Yes where have bilberries, tayberries and loganberries gone? Never seem to see them in the shops these days. In my Church gardens there are plum trees but best of all greengages, which I love. Only ever known one other who adored them like me, my dear dad. I get to harvest the lot!

Whatever happened to gooseberries? We had them all the time when young. Stewed, in crumbles and best of all gooseberry fool 😋

We grow our own gooseberries……..bumper crop every year, although they don’t like extreme heat so ours are sheltered from the afternoon sun. We also grow rhubarb in dustbins as well as blackberries, raspberries and strawberries.

Grandmabatty Thu 19-Mar-26 18:41:47

I love gooseberries.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Thu 19-Mar-26 18:16:24

Gooseberry fool is delicious
Food of the gods Allira
I’m going to M&S tomorrow at the Trafford Centre ~ I’ll put it on my list now!

Gwyllt Thu 19-Mar-26 18:11:07

Like always. Someone comes up with an idea and everyone raves about it. It becomes popular it gets over done then it gets smeared at Bit like blue nun wine !!

Tenko Thu 19-Mar-26 18:04:55

It was Nigella who made avocado on toast a thing . Waitrose used to have the nigella effect . If she mentioned something on her show , Waitrose would sell out of the item .

Well, ROMILO, here's a thing - people like different things. You do you but let others eat what they like without feeling the need to sneer at them.

I wasn't sneering at anyone or telling them what to eat merely stating my preferences. Feel free to eat what you like without taking offense where none was intended.
