Why do some foods become fashionable?

Vine tomatoes and olive oil are items that have become trendy. When I was a child we ate tomatoes, round and red and only in summer apart from a few expensive Canary Island tomatoes bought at Christmas.

Olive oil, that was for earache, no one cooked with it!

Whatever happened to gooseberries? We had them all the time when young. Stewed, in crumbles and best of all gooseberry fool 😋

We used to have quite a number of gooseberry bushes in our garden. It got to the stage where we couldn't even give them away - nobody wanted them, and there was a limit to how many we as a family could eat.

Gooseberries and rhubarb. The good old fashioned fruits. Those, together with a Friday night spoonful of Californian Syrup of Figs kept you very regular!!!

We do still have rhubarb, although it didn't do particularly well last year. Hopefully this year will be better - I do love a rhubarb crumble.

They're in the freezer! DH occasionally asks when we're going to eat them. Must do something with them before the next lot arrive in the garden.

Gooseberry fool is delicious.

I enjoy food and like trying new things but smashed avocado on sour dough bread 🤮🤮🤮. It tastes of nothing.

I have just enjoyed a fresh dressed crab from a local fisherman. Alongside that I had a very tasty vine tomato and a supermarket tiger roll with butter. Plain, simple and delicious.

I don’t enjoy food that has been messed about with or stacked up in a pile because I can’t stop thinking about whether the chef had clean hands.

Well, ROMILO, here's a thing - people like different things. You do you but let others eat what they like without feeling the need to sneer at them.

The influencers have trumpeted the healthy benefits of tinned fish for a while now. They have tinned fish dinner parties, apparently, who knew? Consequently but not completely, as other things can affect it, sardines, pilchards and mackerel are often in short supply. Many tinned fish are in flavoured oils now as requested by the power of the influencers.

Who decides which foods will become 'trendy'
Avocado's on toast. Green, oily and a bit slimy mush on toast, give me a ripe vine tomato a bit of garlic salt and a drizzle of olive oil any day or even some farmhouse cheddar on toast with a smear of mustard.
Prosciutto ham, wafer thin and a bit chewy. I prefer a slice of ham on the bone from the deli.
Blueberries , big, black and juicy but don't have anywhere near the flavour of English strawberries, Scottish raspberries or a ripe peach.
Kiwi fruit, they look good sliced but does anyone enjoy all the little black seeds?
Pomegranates. As a child picking away with a blunt pin I always wondered why they were a treat, still do!
We have so many under used, under promoted fruits in this country. Rhubarb, Victoria plums, blackcurrants, gooseberries and whatever happened to bilberries now they were tasty.
