Cold to set in after “hottest day of the year”

Don’t pack those winter woolies away quite yet!
Gogerddan, Wales, apparently recorded almost 23C on Wednesday, with spring-like conditions across most of the country but temperatures are now expected to drop to “widely below average” for the time of year.

I remember vividly when D1 was born 51 years ago and her christening was to be on Easter Sunday, which I think was 31 March.
We were in London but one of her godmothers had to struggle through blizzards to drive up from Hampshire.

Well it’s pretty cold in S W Wales , today. Sunny but with Avery raw wind.

I made the mistake of washing and packing away thermal long sleeved tops and leggings. Big mistake.
The cold gets me down now. This morning the sun was wonderful but it felt cold enough to snow. North Surrey.

That could be the year we drove from Devon to stay with family in the Midlands for Easter.
I'd bought a new linen suit and silky blouse
Woke up to snow on Good Friday! Brrr!

Tad chilly up north today! Bright and sunny first thing so pegged out some laundry……..blew for an hour but then it hailed so the laundry is now in the tumble dryer………to be fair it is only slightly damp……..and the sun is shining again.

The farther hills across the loch are white again and a stiff breeze is blowing making it feel quite cold. We haven't had a severe winter here for quite some years but we have had plenty of long ones which sputter out bit by bit between occasional spring-like days.

Chilly and breezy here but sunny with fast-moving clouds.
A high chance of rain but nothing as yet.

Here in Essex, lovely sunny morning, no given way to clouds, chill factor and windy! How I long for sunshine!

My Uncle was born April 1947 and there was thick snow on the ground, the midwife struggled to get through. This was in East Yorkshire.

Local hills here in Central Scotland have a covering of snow

But everybody knows 1947 was one of the coldest, longest winters ever.

We brought our first baby home from hospital in the snow, on Sunday 3rd May, 1981 ❄️

It’s raw here today, with a very cold stiff breeze making it feel colder than the actual temperature suggests.
I’ve known it to snow in June before now, so I won’t be packing my winter coats and woollies away just yet.
As the saying goes, “Never cast a clout until May is out”. (I think it refers to the May blossom rather than the month).

I can just remember that, I wasn't even two.
My mother had gone shopping and my older brother and I were waiting anxiously for her to come home. When we opened the back door for her, the snow was coming down thick and fast!!

The wind of the sea here today is icy, we had hailstones on Thursday!!

Jaxjacky Sat 28-Mar-26 13:42:39

Forecast 16/17 here next Tuesday and Wednesday, cooler today with the wind chill.

HowVeryDareYou2 Sat 28-Mar-26 13:44:24

We moved into our house 35 years ago, and it was hailing! April 19th

Witzend Sat 28-Mar-26 15:24:54

With Gdcs at Bocketts Farm today - brief rain and hailstones! And cold! Dh who will hardly ever wear a coat or jacket finally went back to the car for his hat and jacket. Kids not remotely bothered though.
I’m now sitting in the barn with a nice hot cup of tea!
Superb day out with Gdcs anyway - as always here, so many activities for them. Lots of very new baby lambs, too. 😍

I've just sat down in the conservatory, the sun is shining and it's 28C, I might have to strip off my thermal vest 😲

Allira Sat 28-Mar-26 15:52:57

Witzend I used to love going to local farm park with the DGC, alas, they are off doing their own thing these days.

We got married on 25th April 1981- the weekend previous was a gloriously warm, sunny Easter. 2days after Easter Monday there was lying snow, which only finally melted on the Friday. Friday evening was bitterly cold, very windy and wet!
Our wedding day had a beautiful blue sky and sunshine- the photos are deceiving- looks lovely but the fur coats the older ladies were wearing over their Spting outfits gave the game away!

storynanny Sat 28-Mar-26 18:23:17

hailstones at Gosport today. We got drenched at the beach !

Grannybags Sat 28-Mar-26 20:12:03

Yes, ne’er cast a clout till May be out

It was snowing when my son was born on 2nd May 1979

We’ve had hail here today

JamesandJon33 Sun 29-Mar-26 06:25:53

I’ve had to get all my clouts back out.
