Do you get up for something to eat at night?

I have got into the habit of wanting something to eat during the night. It has to be something ready made such as biscuits, or a bit of pork pie. My sister makes herself toast and jam, but I couldn't be bothered slicing bread and roasting it

There was only one time I ever woke up and had a snack at 4 am; the day I went into labour with my first child.

Never since!

On very rare occasions when I’ve not eaten sufficiently in the daytime
I’ve got up and had a bowl of cereal with (cold) milk.

No I never eat after 7.30pm until at least 11am the following day.

Do you remember an early advertisement on television which warned us about ‘night starvation’ ? It was for a milky hot drink, Ovaltine or something similar.

It was Horlicks. There are good reasons why hot milky drinks of any kind can help you sleep ]]www.sleepfoundation.org/nutrition/does-warm-milk-help-you-sleep]]

However as someone who has mild lactose intolerance, were I to manage to drink a hot milky drink and that is doubtful, I would be wide awake all night being sick and being in pain.

Only if I need to take Ibuprofen. (Which should be taken with food.) Then it's a banana.

No, acid reflux would keep me up all blinking night if I did! I don’t eat anything after 8pm and even then I’m carefully as to what I do consume.

No but remember the guy who was a secret lemonade drinker. Would sneak downstairs during the night for a glass of lemonade. Probably a diabetic 🤔

I sometimes make a cup of tea in the night which I really enjoy but never eat anything.

No , it’s never been a thing for me .

If I can’t sleep I’ll get up and have a cup of decaf coffee and a biscuit. I usually get back to sleep very quickly afterwards. When my DH was alive I could get downstairs and bring my drink upstairs, sit up in bed and drink it without him waking up!

No never it would wake me up and wouldn’t be able to get back to sloop needing a pee is bad enough

Midnight feasts are what I think of from Enid Blyton, Elinor Brent Dyer etc books about boarding school.

Or when my DC had sleepovers (sleepover being an oxymoron).

TerriBull Fri 03-Apr-26 13:59:44

No! I'd probably regard midnight feasts as a slippery slope. I don't get hunger pangs in the middle of the night. On the contrary, I take my Levothyroxine on a loo visit around 3 am, as it's supposed to be taken on an empty stomach.

I try to fast at night but sometimes can’t sleep because I’m hungry. I’ll have bread and butter or a chunk of cheese. The dog always knows if I’ve decided on cheese for some reason and gets up too.

Occasionally if I'm having a disturbed night and really can't settle I will get up and make a piece of toast and jam and a cup of decaf tea. Then eventually I will settle .We eat dinner early unless we're going out and if I'm finding sleep elusive a little snack helps .

Ladyleftfieldlover Fri 03-Apr-26 13:42:07

Never.

keepingquiet Fri 03-Apr-26 13:33:00

I can't sleep if I'm hungry so I make sure I have a snack before going to bed.

If I have a banana handy I'll eat that or whatever is to hand but generally I sleep well and haven't been up in the night for ages.

If I've been awake for 2hrs, I'll get up and make a cup of tea and a sandwich

nanaK54 Fri 03-Apr-26 13:09:25

I eat far too much during waking hours, thank goodness I don't eat at night grin

LOUISA1523 Fri 03-Apr-26 13:07:59

Never.

I am diabetic and if my low blood sugar alarm goes off in the night I have to eat, usually force myself to have toast.
Last week when my ten year old granddaughter was staying, she heard me going downstairs and asked to join me.She had toast and said it was the best night of her life!

DianneAngel Fri 03-Apr-26 12:31:11

Only if I have an hypoglycemiac attack. I have Diabetes Type 2. So no choice on those occasions. hugs

Norah Fri 03-Apr-26 12:29:55

MT62 Fri 03-Apr-26 12:28:09

Don’t even bother with supper now.
