Fishy Friday or not?

Having been brought up as RC meat was never eaten on Friday and certainly not on Good Friday.

We have our son and DIL staying for Easter, I have made a vegetarian lasagne and salads for supper, some smoked trout on homemade bread beforehand and a cheeseboard (which sadly I can no longer eat)

My husband is gutted!
Honestly you would think it was the end of the world, he is so disappointed not to be having fish and chips from the “chippy”

He keeps asking if the lasagne could be frozen or if it could be eaten on another day……I’m close to giving in but have just made the salads and dressing as a commitment!

Are you having fish tonight?

Well the lasagne was enjoyed by all, including my reluctant husband!

Interesting how many of us ate fish/vegetarian.

Have a happy and peaceful Easter weekend everyone.

The Holy Church decrees no meat on Fridays, but fish is OK.

How contradictory is that?

Fish IS meat surely? It has fins and scales and lives in the seas as opposed to walking around pasture on four legs.

Same difference.

Catholics eat fish on Fridays—particularly during Lent—as an act of penance to honor the day of Jesus’ death (Good Friday). The tradition involves abstaining from warm-blooded land animal meat, which is seen as a delicacy and "flesh," while fish is traditionally allowed, often symbolizing a simpler, humbler food.

Cut and pasted AI.

Met a friend for coffee yesterday and passed an award winning chippy - it was 10.45am, not yet open and people were queuing outside!

We always had fish on Good Friday but I had a vegetarian pasta dish yesterday which was delicious.

I'm also not RC but my Methodist parents always served fish on Good Friday and I have continued the custom. Granted yesterday it was haddock fishcakes and salmon fishcakes from the local fishmongers, so nothing fancy but very delicious they were. Lamb will be served when the family come over for an Easter lunch. Again what we did as children and carried on.

We had seafood risotto last night. If I say so myself, it was delicious! 😉

No I never a tradition in my life, I do eat fish regularly however and fish and chips occasionally on Saturday but I do begrudge the price nowadays £14 last time.

Calendargirl Sat 04-Apr-26 07:27:52

We had home made fish pie, from the freezer.

Usually have it on a Saturday, but as I had been to a Good Friday church service, I wanted something easy that I didn’t have to prepare when I got home.

DH says they always had fish on GF, but his family were not remotely religious.

We had sea bass and pac choi. I’ve realised we usually have fish on Fridays, not for religious reasons, but practical.
We have a fish van that comes on a Friday so we eat the Sea bass fresh!

Yes we have fish on Fridays but then I love fish and we have it in some form or about three times a week.

The price of a full size cod and chips around here is £14 Charleygirl but the fish keeps getting more expensive.
I would pay it if the meal was tasty but the last time we bought from the Chip Shop it was very greasy.
We aren’t religious and our plan is to have fish tomorrow evening (cooked by me).

Not RC , but always eat fish on Fridays and usually on Tuesdays too.
This evening I had a piece of hake.

My local fish and chip closed down, and the next is too far away now I no longer have a licence. I couldn't afford it there as it cost me £17.50 and that was around 3 years ago. I am amazed they are still in business charging that amount for one portion of haddock, rather than cod and chips.

We got two pensioners fish and chips yesterday lunchtime and they cost £8.00 each. The portions were large. 1 portion of chips went straight into the freezer for another day. The pieces offish was a bit smaller than average, but not much.

Yes, fish tonight and fish every Friday.

It is Roman Catholic tradition but Protestants stopped eating fish on Fridays. As a result, the fishing industry suffered so Edward VI issued a decree that fish must be eaten on Fridays.

It's become a tradition for many.

I wish we had a good fish and chip shop, but our one is always disappointing

MG55 Fri 03-Apr-26 21:50:21

Tuna pasta here but all the fish and chip suppers sound wonderful 😀

dragonfly46 Fri 03-Apr-26 21:49:20

I often have fish on a Friday. This evening cod loin, new potatoes, samphire and Hollandaise sauce.

ClicketyClick Fri 03-Apr-26 21:37:31

FGT
But I usually (unless invited out) have fish & chips from the chippy round the corner every Friday night. The queue was out of the door tonight being GF. £7:50 and delicious as always!

Wow £7.50. I pay £11.50 which is the average price locally.

Ashcombe Fri 03-Apr-26 21:30:46

Salmon here with new pots and asparagus in honour of Good Friday.

valdavi Fri 03-Apr-26 21:25:26

Boggled Mind if I asked my husband what we wanted to eat, we would have beef lasagne every day! Maybe sausage & chips once a week for a change... so he gets what he's given, but only things he enjoys.

HelterSkelter - yes prawn cocktail counts 😂
Out of curiosity, what made you choose that name ?
