What does Gransnet mean to you?

I have a small (8) close knit family, friends/acquaintances in a walking group who I only see for an hour, once a week, and Gransnet in between.

I like that I can look in on Gransnet whenever it suits me, and either join in or not. I enjoy the interaction with people but when I want to leave, I can.

'Real' friendships can be too time consuming, needy, draining and unreliable. I don't have the interest when so much of my time is spent with my four generational family and fitting time in to just enjoy being on my own.

Sharing experiences with Gransnetters, taking and giving advice, empathising when things are tough or congratulating when things are good, general chit chat and enjoying the humour, are all things that I enjoy about Gransnet. How about you?

I read that as 'she is topless in a bus' 😂
Glad I wasn't the only one. Marzipan will be forever topless in my mind now 🤭

Similar to others, I like the variety of topics and am interested in others viewpoints. I tend to avoid a few like the political forum because I don't like what can sometimes be aggressive replies just because someone's views differ. I've noticed this behaviour occasionally spilling over into other forum topics which is a shame as it can feel like a poster is being shut down. I do enjoy GN - the idea of posting about x,y,z and GNers having the knowledge, understanding and empathy. I read all replies to any topics I've read and dib into GN usually at some point during the day and late at night. I love that GN is generally very supportive and long may it continue.

I read that as ‘she is topless on a bus’ too!

I love Gransnet but tend to only read and post on non confrontational threads! Too much of a coward to venture onto the political forum!

Meanwhile what do other GNers look like? Doodledog is a Prue Leith lookalike. Allira is small and determined looking with short spiky hair. BlueBelle has long grey/brown hair swept up in combs behind her ears and wears loose flowing garments. Oreo is very dressy and never seen without full make up and high heels. How's that for starters?

JamesandJon33 Mon 06-Apr-26 18:02:50

No… Doodledog has long brown hair , a little untidy, and soft brown eyes.
Allira has very dark hair, red lips and wears big hoop earrings.
Bluebelle has soft white hair and a gentle face. Wears a lot of blue.
Oreo similarly has white hair in a stylish chignon. She wears a lot of soft brown, loose dresses.
Now have a go at me.

Allira Mon 06-Apr-26 18:06:10

I do have dark hair, but not red lips, well unless I use the Boots lipstick I bought by mistake.
And small earrings, some are hoops 😂

James and Jon 🤔

A farmer's wife, curly brown hair, rosy cheeks, wears wellies and not afraid of hard work.

Allira Mon 06-Apr-26 18:17:28

Allira is small and determined looking with short spiky hair.
😂
I am getting shorter!
My hair is not spiky but might be if I chopped it short.
determined looking well I'm determined to get to grips with a pattern I'm trying to do, so perhaps yes, at the moment.

Aveline
Tall, brown hair in a bob, spectacles, nice smile.

BlueBelle has long grey/brown hair swept up in combs behind her ears and wears loose flowing garments.
Or dungarees! Nurtures wildlife, especially seagulls!

Oreo is very dressy and never seen without full make up and high heels.
I see her as a very practical person so probably not high heels and a lot of makeup.

Sorry Marzipan I meant an open top bus. Honestly my memory is pants. I had to Google bus without a top to get the proper word. And I used to travel on one in the summer from Ramsgate to Broadstairs to visit my Granny. We had to duck the low hanging branches on the way. Health and Safety be damned.

I don’t know how I would start my day without Mick’s Good Morning thread. I love to hear what everyone is going to be doing. Other than that, I read but am very selective about where I stick my toe in the water.

I’ve been on Gransnet since 2011 and it has a different vibe these days - more supportive and empathetic (if you don’t count the politics threads!). It used to be a lot more combative in the old days but more humorous too. I have met many Gransnetters over the years - regular meet-ups in York which covid put paid to and, sadly, we never got going again; and encounters during our travels with Gransnetters whom I now count among my greatest friends, even though distance precludes us spending time together.

Doodledog Mon 06-Apr-26 20:21:20

I am definitely not a PL lookalike😀. My hair is longish and brown, and I am always a little untidy, so JamesandJon is nearest.

I see Allira as tall with short hair, and agree that BlueBelle has swept up hair and flowing garments. JamesandJon is slim and petite, and Aveline has a precisely cut chin-length bob.

Everyone talks exactly like me, even when I know where they live and that they probably won't grin.

Aveline Mon 06-Apr-26 21:05:26

Allira is pretty accurate about me except I never smile!

Allira Mon 06-Apr-26 21:43:57

I see Allira as tall
Oh, I wish, Doodledog, I just need stretching 😀

JamesandJon33 Tue 07-Apr-26 06:10:44

Couldn’t be more wrong about me *Allira’. I am tall, white haired now and a writer.

Marzipan22 Tue 07-Apr-26 06:59:06

Ha ha, I see that my theoretically bared bosom is being discussed. 😂 Unfortunately the open-top buses have been discontinued but yes, I have frequented them often, though mostly with clothes on. 🤭🤣

I discovered Gransnet during lockdown when to my surprise I was feeling isolated. I've come and gone a few times when I've become wearied by criticisms levelled at people but have got used to it now and value it for its variety of opinions and information. I've met one Gransnetter twice which has been lovely. I wish I wasn't a million miles from Scotland as I would love to go to their meet-ups.

I live alone so don't always have someone to talk to. Gransnet is like a perfect friend. I can discuss anything on here which I don't do with real friends.
I have learned a lot too. Some very wise and knowledgeable grans who I like to see posting.
It's interesting to 'talk' to people I don't know and get to know their very different characters.
I am very thankful to Gransnet.

Me too!

I've learned quite a lot from some very well informed members who really know their onions!

I like to dip in and out. My favourite is the Art and Craft section. I’ve had lots of positive feedback for my work.Great tips on here about all subjects. I steer clear of politics and religion. It’s a little friend without the worry of falling out. I have a small group of good friends in real life and a stormy background. You are all a fabulous group of virtual friends. Thank you.

honeyrose Tue 07-Apr-26 09:08:39

I love Gransnet and so glad I found it. I like being able to voice an opinion or ask for advice without anyone knowing who I am. I’m quite a private person. I have several good friends, but sometimes I feel like I need to ask a group of people (for a range of differing opinions) and who don’t know me personally. I’ve had some brilliant advice from GN, some of it not what I was expecting and advice which has really challenged my thinking and has therefore been very helpful. I don’t wish to meet up with anyone - no offence - but GN has been invaluable to me. I’m definitely an overthinker and GN has helped me reach solutions. I love the humour on here too - it’s not all heavy stuff. And the hints and tips are great. I dip in and out and I recognise that several of you are frequent posters - which makes you feel like friends, the familiarity of your names. I too steer away from politics, although I occasionally look at these threads. Thanks everyone for being my virtual friends! Long may it continue.

Well, apart from the many nice things, too much time spent when I should be Doing Something Useful!

Well, how wrong can our perceptions of others be!

Yes, I am 5' 8" or thereabouts, as Doodledog imagines. wink
(Minus several inches!)

I’d be interested to hear what other peoples impressions of me are. Any one?

You're tall and leggy and wear hippy clothes, quirky ear rings and your hair is long, often clipped or tied back. 😄

I find it entertaining, and marvel at the truly terrifying attitudes (and lives) some people here have

NannaFirework Tue 07-Apr-26 14:00:23

Kinship advice company a listening ear !

Like many others I find it very interesting to read different points of view. I've recv'd some good tips/advice on here and have tried to reciprocate.
I do sometimes think some of the comments are downright unpleasant or unhelpful or incredibly lengthy so tend to ignore posts from some names but on the whole I would really miss it if it wasn't here every day in my inbox. Go gransnet!!

Etoile2701 Tue 07-Apr-26 15:08:47

I always look forward to reading Gransnet.
