Barclays and Tescos have teamed up to offer 5 per cent cash back on all purchases from this Friday until the end of July.

Is it 1st April?

Sago Wed 29-Apr-26 09:27:25

The link explains, this is for Barclays customers only and is capped at £10 a month.

I’ve had an email about this. Pity that the only Tesco I can access is a b****r to get in and out of so I generally steer clear of it.

There must be something in it for them.
Two companies I wouldn’t p on if they were on fire.

Let’s hope it is extended to other supermarket garages too, I find it really annoying that they no longer put the petrol price up, so you don’t know how much your fuel is until you come to pay.

They do here.
Annoyingly, DH reads the prices out to me every time we go past a fuel station. It's nothing new, he always has and compares the prices, even of diesel even though we don't have a diesel vehicle.
grin that is a forced grin, btw.

Barclays acquired the biggest share of Tesco Bank in 2024, loans, savings, etc.
Tesco retains its very good insurance services - house, car, pet, travel, etc.

Allira Wed 29-Apr-26 13:54:00

Ah, that is why!

I never knew that.

It’s possible to check fuel prices and find the cheapest in your area on the MyRac app. You don’t have to be a member to do it. I know there are several apps that provide this information.

You just enter the post code and it will provide info from petrol stations eg in a 3 mile radius. I’m fortunate to have a Morrisons and an Asda petrol station within 2 miles and they tend to be competitive.

I was surprised to see in my son’s hometown last week that 2 petrol stations within 300 yards of each other had a price difference of 5p a litre. Presumably the more expensive one is relying on drivers not checking.

It's the law that the price must be displayed on the petrol pump so you know before you start dispensing it. I always thought it was law that they had to have those huge displays visible from the road with the prices but apparently it's not, just very common practice.

Casdon Wed 29-Apr-26 16:13:03

I agree Rosie51, because it’s the big signs advertising the price that help you decide whether to get your petrol there, or somewhere else, it’s too late by the time you get to the pump. It should be law that they all visibly display the price at the roadside in my opinion.

No need for me to wait. I get my electricity at cheap overnight rate and pay about £1 for 100 miles in my electric car.

While I agree fully with your last sentence, it is within your power to decline to use the pump if the price is too high and drive away. Realistically I accept most of us would just moan and buy it anyway.
In my area all garages seem to have the large 'viewed from the roadside' displays. It really notices when one fails to have illuminated prices.

Casdon Wed 29-Apr-26 22:41:58

You’re right, it’s just an unnecessary annoyance though, because it feels as though they are being dishonest.

Rosie51 Wed 29-Apr-26 22:43:30

Oh absolutely, they know human nature is basically lazy and takes the path of least resistance!

But doesn't that mean if you only ever charge your car from home overnight you are very restricted on the length of longer journeys?

how on earth is that legal?

FranP Thu 30-Apr-26 15:41:19

Sainsbury's own petrol stations seem to be consistently cheap. I have filled up in Crawley, Bigglewade and Dudley recently and they have been cheaper than their neighbours.

Estrellita Thu 30-Apr-26 15:42:28

Just wondering why not? Not that I am interested in the price of fuel as I don't drive.

Apparently they legally have to show the price on the pumps, but the big displays are not covered in law.
