I was quite a clumsy child and I wasn't the most careful with my mums things. I always used to feel awful when she told me off and swore I'd never be like that with my children. Today my daughter went to work in an office on a building site, took one of my pretty expensive mugs and smashed it. I am absolutely livid but hiding it well
VintagewhineLel1 I was annoyed, I didn't get cross with her, I had a little vent on here. I thought this was a place I could share my silly stories, sorry it's annoyed you
You can have a little vent on here, on a CHAT thread.
I'm sure acknowledging a minor annoyance doesn't mean you lack empathy for those suffering major traumas, and you're not diminishing anyone else's serious struggles by doing so.
I don't know why anyone feels they should gatekeep what others are allowed to find annoying!
PS - why did she choose the 'best' mug? It's the sort of thing my teenage son used to do... dust off a bone-china tea-plate and take it out into the garden with a sandwich balanced on it and then leave it precariously balanced on a window ledge for me to find the next day
It's funny, sometimes you can have a mug for years and it survives, yet some get broken almost immediately. I know that it's unreasonable but you can feel irrationally upset about it. We still have a couple of very dark blue mugs that we bought from Woolworths in the 1980's and my husband loves them. It's not unknown for him to go on using a badly chipped and stained mug for years
You're allowed to be upset, even though it was only a mug. It was a special one I'd not take a china mug to a building site. If I'm at my daughter's doing some baby or dog sitting I try and use boring mugs eg plain white or something like a sports direct mug that can be easily replaced if I have an accident. And even if I do t replace it like for like it's not a mug with memories I did break a bowl at hers, her kitchen floor is hard tiles, fortunately it was a white IKEA one. I bought 2 just in case I did it again
This has reminded me that, aged about 7, I broke a pretty white and gold milk jug that was all my mum had left of her mum whom I never met. Silent tears burst out of her eyes and I was immediately mortified and so, so sorry. She said "it's alright darling - it's only a thing and she wouldn't want me to be cross with you". Oh God it hurts. My mum was incredible and my best friend until she died many years later.
Relationships with daughters can be much more fragile than china mugs (sadly I speak from experience). I would buy myself a new mug Biscuitmuncher. I can appreciate it has made you upset and I’m sorry for that.
My thoughts. Relationships matter more than mugs, although I truly can appreciate the loss of something so special.
Dear Biscuitmuncher, is this about more than that particular mug? Is she somewhat careless of your feelings on other occasions?
Well done for your response, and consider if there are other matters you'd love to "mend"?
I would not be raging silently! I have a cupboard full of cheap mugs and just a few posh ones which were expensive. If anyone chose to take one of the posh ones to a building site I'd be furious!
Sorry about your mug getting broken, and I understand your annoyance, Biscuitmuncher, but it sounds like an accident, these things happen, and if you look up the make online, you might be able to source a replacement.
Despite your annoyance, I’m glad you are not venting to your daughter but doing it here instead.
It may seem trivial to some but I would have been annoyed as well. I recently broke a mug that was my mum’s and she always used to make me a coffee in it when I visited. Silly to get sentimental over a mug but I was furious with myself.

It hasn’t annoyed me! It’s so good to have a place to rant, some will judge, most will emphasise and it often puts things in perspective!

I am having the worst of times right now but welcome lighthearted and silly stories. Bring them on please.

Ooh Grammaretto I have a massive Scottish linen cupboard and also a nice school cupboard that would go perfectly with your lovely table and drawers!
Your cozy mug looks like a small jug my mother made in the 1960s which I managed to break on its way home from firing. I fixed it and then broke it again. 😯
Your daughter just "didn't think" Biscuitmuncher - just grabbed it and left.
It's a mug. I save my anger for the things that matter. Your daughter was thoughtless, it happens there's so much more that can happen in life that's far worse.
