AIBU smoking outdoors?

Some years ago I recall one of my mother's carers coming into the house and reeking of cigarette smoke. I assumed she had been smoking on the way to us and asked her not to do that again as we found the smell offensive. She said she too found it offensive - she'd been given a chain-smoking client and was coming directly from his house to ours. I wondered what rights she had to refuse to take that client - her workplace, but his home?

I gave up smoking when I was diagnosed with oral cancer, and switched to vaping, with the specialist's "approval". Now I'm trying to give them up too but have at least cut down the nicotine strength to abt 25% of what I originally. I don't smoke those that produce lots of smoke.

Nor do I smoke in the street unless I can find an open area with no people or windows. A lot of outdoor areas are "no smoking or vaping" nowadays and I respect that. I would consider a garden centre to be an enclosed space and not puff there unless there was a dedicated area.

Yes, I've nipped out the back of A&E before now, thinking it was not allowed and found the floor covered in dimps!

Tonight we had to shut all the windows because next door's BBQ and wood pellet pizza oven were filling our house with smokey smells and greasy smells. In this heat was that fair? To us no, to them yes they were enjoying their outdoor space. In my opinion smoking outdoors is no different. I'm not a smoker having given up 25 years ago.

Smoking isn't sllowed within the hospital grounds, but it happens all the time.

I don’t mind the smell of cigars or pipes, it evokes nice memories of those no longer here. I’ve never smoked either of them though.

I hate the smell and hate that it appears to cling to clothes and hair.

I was never a smoker, tried it a few times, it did absolutely nothing for me other than give me an awful dry mouth and cough and smell 🤷🏻‍♀️🤷🏻‍♀️

But regardless, I find pipe smoke delicious-smelling.

I really love the smell of cigarettes and pipes ... takes me right back to my Dad in his wet Harris tweed and the damp smell of out kitchen ... I love the smell ... what really pisses me off is when the doctor says " Oh it's probably cos you smoked " What the Bunion problem ? or the slipped disc ?

Vapes are equally annoying and give off a huge plume of smoke/steam that smells like acrid rotten fruit and will engulf anyone in a vapers direct vicinity.

Totally agree, horrendous chemical stinks.

I was a half hearted social smoker when I was young, but stopped when I was first pregnant because the very smell made me heave. That was 53 years ago, but every whiff of a cigarette still has the same effect, so I loathe it with a passion.

I avoid pubs and restaurants where there are people smoking at the door. The smoke always seems to come in.

Must say that as an ex smoker I love getting a whiff of someone else’s fag!

I'm an ex smoker and hate the small of it now. I grew up in a house with a heavy smoker father and never noticed it then, but after I gave up - over 50 years ago now - I really notice other people's smoke. I still remember when smoking indoors was outlawed in the workplace and the problems colleagues who smoked had to find somewhere to have a smoke at breaks, especially when it was raining. I was prompted to give up when staying in a place which did not allow smoking indoors and having to go out in the rain was what made me decide to quit!

Ii can see both sides of this.
On the one hand, its not nice (unless you're witzend!) to be close to cigarette smoke.

The other is, where can smokers go to enjoy a fag in peace?

I haven't smoked this century and have no desire to smoke again, but I too like the smell of fresh cigarette smoke.
I thought people were not allowed to smoke anywhere now apart from their own houses.

Having never smoked I find it very unpleasant to be near someone smoking, either cigarettes or vapes. My late husband gave up smoking 20 years before he died but it still had an impact on his death. Adults can obviously make their own choices but I believe it should only be allowed in designated areas in all public places. I don’t go as far as them not being able to smoke in the street or certain park areas (away from playground areas) .

I am amazed that anyone can afford to smoke - the price of a packet of death is horrendous!!

We were inside a restaurant last week and smoke was wafting inside from outdoor tables. Really unpleasant, but we couldn’t have been further away from the doors so nothing we could do.

A nearby shop has just become a Vape and barbershop. The customers and staff stand outside smoking everything including weed and my porch smells of it. The council can't do anything and I can't open windows at the front of the house.

Oh Witzend, so do If I could relive one thing it would be curling up on the sofa with a really good book and a kingsize Rothmans. It was bliss...........until I found out what it was doing to me.

Can't stand the smoke or smell from cigarettes nor the vapes. If I find myself anywhere near someine smoking or vaping I move away. Even if not doing either and I can still sense the awful smell I won't go near them. Worst situation is in a lift, if someone smelling like a smoker gets in, then Im out. Smokers dhoukd be restricted to home or private propert with permission. Who on earth can afford cigarettes or vapes nowadays, they cost a small fortune. I worked with a dental surgeon and an orthodontist, their thoughts on smoking - get a dummy tit, it's the sucking sensation that's desired.

It would only take one careless smoker to start fire and a garden center has a lot of flammable items. That would be my concern if I were the owner.
