Weatherforecasting

I'm wondering about this, too. They've got it so wrong even up here in the north-west. Where are the promised thunderstorms, or even rain? Why have they taken this area out of the amber warning area when it's even hotter than yesterday? Why do they keep on extending the sun day after day, and putting back the rain day after day.

You'd think with today's technology they'd be able to come up with something a bit more accurate.

Oh I agree totally. In London it was predicted to break on Friday with thunderstorms and rain, and temps looked due to go down but are now set to be hot on Saturday as well as the blistering day we had today. Means peoples travel plans are having to be cancelled because trains are still not running due to the heat so anyone banking on temps going down anytime soon in order to enjoy something arranged this weekend will be seriously disappointed

And I hate this weather with a vengeance, with a DD in hospital and having to get there using public transport, is bloody awful, excuse my French.

We had a splash of rain early this morning in Gainsborough, Yay!
Now it's even hotter.
I do hope tomorrow is a bit cooler as I have already postponed driving to my mother's to give her her shower.
The aircon in our 23 year old car packed up about 5 years ago and because we never really expect it to pass another MOT we didn't think it was worth spending more than the car cost us (or is worth!) getting a new compressor.

The weather information is accurate and is updated frequently. Of course, I realise that this may not be so for all areas.

DD2 has had a nightmare commuting this week, so hot and trains cancelling left right and centre!

She is working from home today so not so bad. DD1 has left this afternoon to get a train to Gatwick for a weekend away. She left loads of extra time and has messaged 2 trains delayed before she even managed to get on one. Don’t get me started on the price of tickets/ season tickets !

Also big accident on the M25 at a junction near us. Traffic was at a standstill for hours and hours with no effort to slowly get people of at a junction . Some people in the queue also had to be taken to hospital because the weather caused them to collapse. Nightmare !

I use the same source as you, Magenta8, but it's about as accurate as a broken clock (in this area at least).

This is what happens with global warming. Most weather forecasts are based on what has been before.
So as we have never been in the situation before it’s going to be harder and harder to predict.
The situation at the moment is to do with un predicted air flow causing the heat to become stuck.

I use the BBC as well, also Accuweather for local area, and live weather forecast after the BBC 6 p.m news. It’s accurate for 24 hours ahead certainly, but at the beginning of the week no hint that the h3atwave would last until today or tomorrow. In fact much was made of the red alert being extended for a third day.

Question is why was this unpredictable when in other ways weather forecasting seems so sophisticated?

We’re in the northwest. Just had a short thunderstorm with enough rain to soak the washing I hung out earlier.
Fine and dry again now.

I use a local amateur weatherman for my main forecast. He’s pretty accurate as he can take in local variations.

As I understand it, the longer range the forecast the less accurate it is. So the next 24hrs is pretty predictable, 48hrs a bit less so and by the time you get to ten days, it can be inaccurate at times. The weather systems don’t always do what we expect them to do, especially with climate change on the menu.

I have the Norwegian weather app YR weather.
It’s very accurate.

Weather forecast for my area said expect rain around 1pm,at 10 past one it wasn,t just rain it was a deluge.
Bouncing off the roads causing flooding though it lasted around an hour it dried quickly in the heat.U til it returned even heavier about 7pm .
I,d Ben planting things to fill the gaps this morning so they are well watered in .

Weather forecasting and Fortune telling must be the only proffessions that escape having the Trade Descriptions Act applied to them.

So very innacurate, routinely, but they get away with it. Also routinely.
