Not everyone is interested in watching sport. My heart sinks every day when I look at what’s on TV. There is nothing but Sport every day, for hours at a time, on most channels throughout the evening . Be it football tennis golf rugby cricket it’s all balls to me snd I can’t wait for it to be over.

It DOES take all sorts to make a world, but the overwhelmingly rabid fixation/obsession/dedication to sport all over the media leaves me cold.

My pet hatred just has to be Formula 1. Men whizzing eternally around and around and around in circles using up a generous portion of the world's fuel resources, at the very least, plus very much risking their lives - which is the macabrè reason that the crowds turn up.

There's a kink in the human psyche that makes the prospect of possibly witnessing another being acquiring life-changing injuries, or death, at extremely high speeds just too good to resist.

There are many channels people can watch, the world Cup is every four years and appeals to millions. I find the attitude that there is nothing else to watch bewildering.
I watch two soaps and both of them are on. There are good programes on the Sky chanel, there are film channels as well.

So do I but not at the expense of other people's feelings, enjoyment, and profit in a sector that needs it.

I have always thought it was madness to cross oceans to see a football match you didn’t have tickets for but our son who lives in Vancouver went to the “Fanzone” to watch a match on a big screen.

He said the atmosphere was fabulous, loads of food trucks, bars and no unpleasant rivalry!

Reasonable to be worried. Not reasonable to want England to lose just because it affects onetwi members of her family.
Think of people who have saved to go to the World Cup. Think of a industry, hospitality who have had a tough time who will make some profit due to the world Cup.
I think the sentiment of the poster is utterly selfish.
Think of people who are putting flags in there windows and coming together as friends to discuss the world Cup.
You state and I quote "Save your opprobrium for the football money making factory" I don't need to be told how to think, I was answering a poster who I think is wrong. Her daughter knew the dates of the world Cup and should have made contingency plans. Quite frankly the daughter may be one person losing money, but if Englsnd lose as that poster wants, thousands of hospitality establismrnts may lose profit.
Her daughter is one person as opposed to thousands/millions who want England to win, who enjoy football and will boost the hospitality industry.

rafichagran- rather unkind. It's perfectly reasonable to be worried about your family's business.
Football is a multimillion pound business making fortunes from hard working fans. Save your opprobrium for the football money making factory.

Please also note the hospitality trade will make a good profit out if the World Cup good for them as the these businesses have taken a hit lately.

I think that sentiment is horrible. thousands of fans have gone to watch England play in America, people like me are fans and want them to win.
The dates of the world Cup have been known for some time could your daughter not have plans in place? A good business should have contingency plans.
Your daughters business does not trump the enjoyment and pride of thousands of fans. She knows there is a world Cup every four years.
Desperate for England not to win. Very selfish me me attitude.

Strangely, our local supermarkets manage to keep their drinks aisle well stocked at all times. Shame I can't say the same about the Milk shelves.

Not so sure about this World Cup, but there was a pub in Richmond that advertised it wasn't showing the World Cup last time round. The pub was actually quite busy as non fans could go to a place to socialise without having to endure football.
I won't be watching the match tomorrow, I'll be driving back from Scotland when it's on and the roads should be quiet.

I realised the other day that we’re going to a gig on World Cup final day, booked months ago. I thought DH would take that news badly, but he surprised me by saying he’ll just catch it later. I don’t think he’s expecting England to be in it though…

Perhaps they should have an area with a big screen where people at the festival who want to watch the match could go?

They do have contingency plans along those lines - but they will lose their walk-up which is where the profit lies. And big screen hire does not come cheap ....

As if our hospitality industry aren’t in enough trouble 🤬
