A husband.

A motorhome to travel about in. However, there are far too many about and locals don't like them. I realized I wouldn't like them if I were in the locals position.

A loyal and loving partner.

Elegance and poise!

I vaguely assumed I would have a daughter, but I have only sons. Beloved as they are, I’d still have liked a daughter. I have a granddaughter, but it’s not the same.

NotSpaghetti if we’re going back our teens, I thought I’d have a large Queen Anne house, six children and two labradors.

I’ve managed a new-build house, four kids and two cats. grin

Better health and more teeth.

Plus a couple of life time friends.

I don’t think I ever thought much about life in my 70’s but if I had done so I don’t think there is anything I haven’t now got.
I recognise that I am very lucky, I have a loving family and materially everything I want or need.
I am so sorry for those of you who have lost loved ones, and send my condolences.

Children, but it wasn't to be. I am lucky to have my dear partner of 27 years. If he dies before me, my life will be over too.

As a teenager I fell in love with an orangery.
I was sure that hard work (or good fortune) would secure one for me.

Sadly no...
At least not yet!

My answer must depend on at which point of my life I had asked myself this question.

Until I was around 25, I would confindetly have asserted that as my 75th birthday approached I would have husband, children, grandchildren and most of the circle of friends I had then.

By my earlier thirties, I had realised that husband might still be a possiblity, and he was ,nearly 20 years later but that the ship had probably sailed regarding biological children (as indeed it had).

Now aged 74 and counting, I am a widow, with two adults who regard me as their mum, and whom I love as my children, although we are neither biologically nor legally related, my younger sister died nearly ten years ago, which I certainly did not anticipate, nor the fact that only two of my friends from young adulthood are still part of my life, plus two schoolfriends, whom I only contact in cyberspace, as we live in different countries.

On the positive side, I am finacially far better off than I ever anticipated being, although that I would cheerfully have renounced if I could have traded it for loved ones, I still have my health, have a small circle of good friends, all who have come into my life in later years, and still find life good.

I had two children who are now middle aged. I thought I would have more grandchildren. One AC and long term partner have chosen not to have children. The other AC's husband was diagnosed with cancer when she was on maternity leave with their only child. AC was a carer for a long time and now she is a widow.

I used to live at a distance from this AC and had caring responsibilities myself for an older relative. It was the other grandparents nearby who looked after GC as a young child whenever help was needed. This was painful for me.

My own health is now not good and I may not survive long enough to see my GC grow up - let alone become a great grandmother.

But I am grateful for all my lovely friends.

FriedGreenTomatoes2. Same for me . Mine was only 57 when he died of pulmonary fibrosis.

I thought I’d be living in a house, mortgage free, instead I’m still renting.

Nicksmrs46 Mon 06-Jul-26 14:27:04

Great grandchildren!!🤭

My dear husband but not to be.

Peaseblossom Mon 06-Jul-26 14:15:09

Jess20 I understand. I lost my 6 year old son in 1980. I often think what it would have been like having more grandchildren and great grandchildren. I only have 2 from my oldest daughter and my youngest one doesn't want children. I won't see any great grandchildren as my daughter wasn't very young when she had her children.

Romola Mon 06-Jul-26 14:11:35

A granddaughter. I mustn't complain, as I do have two terrific grandsons. Don't tell their mother, my wonderful DD.

Peaseblossom Mon 06-Jul-26 14:07:27

I got divorced in 1996 and thought I'd have remarried. Had a couple of chances, but didn't feel right and it is 14 years since I split up with my last long-term partner. Definitely did not think I'd be alone at this time. On several dating sites, but no-one that tempts me. So difficult finding someone you're attracted to who is a suitable distance away, with all the provisos like non smoker, etc. I saw someone I quite liked today on a dating site, but one of stipulations was no pets! I got two rescue cats four months ago and they are very important to me.

Patience!
For some inexplicable reason, I always thought I'd evolve into a sweet old lady 😅 - but I'm as impatient and irascible as ever

If anything I think I've become less tolerant as I've got older,

Yes! I imagined that I'd become a grown up with a sensible point of view, I'm still slightly rebellious and don't think like many people my age. I think that my life might be easier if I was more of a conformist, but my husband isn't one either so as long as we have each other that's fine.
My sympathies are with those of you who've lost your husbands, particularly if they died younger than anybody would reasonably expect.
