What words annoy you when used wrong or people don't know the meaning of?

People say 'literally' when they mean figuratively. Like 'I literally died of shock'. This happens so often that I think that the meaning of the word must be changing. This seems to be how languages evolve.

Using “h” wrongly, eg “as” when it should be “has” both in speech and in writing.

"Can I get..." at the coffee shop/cafe/restaurant/pub.
The answer I long to hear is: "No you can't. Customers aren't allowed in the kitchen area for health and safety reasons. But I can get it for you; that's my job."

No Cossy you're not dim at all, font has fallen into common usage but it is completely wrong to refer to the design of letters in an alphabet as a font.

A font is merely an adaptation of a lettering's design not the name of the original design itself.

For instance, Arial is the name of the original design of letter, Arial bold, say, is just a adaptation of Arial and not a typeface in itself because it's been adapted from the original design.

A font can only be part of a typeface it can't stand alone.

That's why, when someone is referring to different styles of lettering, to say "all the different fonts" is complete nonsense as it would be all the same just thinner or fatter, no different styles at all.

This is a blinding revelation.

Fulsome! It gets used like this: "he made a fulsome apology" to mean a sincerely meant apology - when in fact the word actually means sickeningly obsequious or nauseous.

I agree I found the wrong use of wrong for what should be wrongly, wrong! (And ironic in this context)

"I was sat" instead of "I was sitting"
Grand daughter frequently stumped me (former English teacher!) referring to grammatical terms I'd never heard of...then announce,"Mum and me are going shopping"

Perhaps it's another unwanted US import but frequent use of "wrack" not "rack"

My daughter in law says proberly instead of properly. My son says to all intensive purposes. For as long as I can remember I have tried to educate and correct them but they continue it doesn’t drive me mad, life is too short for that. I just smile wryly.

Using what instead of which as in ‘what words’ !

Incorrect use or 'yourself', instead of just using 'you', eg We'll look forward to hearing from yourself. Do people think it sounds posh?

Being absolutely a ignoramus on words, I still cannot figure why lose is sounded looooose, yet loose is sounded very short 'o".
Choose is sounded a long oooooo and chose is sounded a short "o"
I am convinced I was taught the 'oo" meant it was a long "oooo" in both choose and loose. These two words confuse me even though I have learned to use the opposite sounds in loose and choose.

It’s double negatives for me.
“I’ve not done nothing” or worse still “I’ve not done nofink.”

Another bugbear is when people, especially presenters, don’t pronounce the ‘t’s’ in a word. Warder instead of water, Tomah-o instead of tomato. 🙄

Oh and another - the American math instead of maths!

Yesterday's mails had 'check' in lieu of 'cheque'!

I sort of cringe when I hear northern accents.
They always say “she were”, instead of she was.
She were there or she were going out for instance

Obviously it’s a northern thing.
But it just sounds so lazy to me.

HATE could of, would of, should of!! Also, I work with people who say fetched instead of brought & that makes me cringe, but a big bug-bear I have to deal with daily is people not knowing what a hyphen is when I have to give out an e-mail address!!!! Seriously!!!!

Irregardless instead of regardless

Referring to people as "that" instead of "who", e.g.: People that drive.

Talking heads on television who refer to themselves as "myself" rather than "I", e.g. John and myself are happy to be here. Drop John and what is it: Myself is happy to be here? Myself am happy to be here?

Expresso instead of espresso is used so frequently it has become acceptable usage despite being incorrect.

Unkept instead of unkempt. Draw instead of drawer, and the best one Chester Draws.

Whilst. Pronounced as it is or even written down. For some reason if someone pronounces it why-lst I don’t mind it as much.
