What words annoy you when used wrong or people don't know the meaning of?

There is a car advertisement on the television. The voice over, a woman , says docu men ary.Gets me every time

Math instead of maths

Sekertry instead of secretary.

One I seem to have seen frequently in recent days is “rest bite” instead of respite. I suppose it does explain what the word means

What really irks me is when 'professionals' fail on simple grammar rules and the real bugbear is when a therapist of whatever kind writes things like "I practice in a holistic way" instead of "I practise in a holistic way". At school I was taught that in words like practice - practise, advice - advise, licence - license - the noun of the pair was written with a c and the verb of the pair was written with an s - and the easy way to learn this was to think that c+ n, and s + v and that c came before s in the alphabet, and n came before v.

My English grammar mistress who of course must now be long-since dead would be delighted to know that I'm passing her rules on all those years later!

Mixing up to, too, and two.

Saying was when you should say were.

Trend instead of tend.
You just cannot trust these Spell Checkers nowadays.

Glottal stops. Lost consonants
Fake Mockney and Mancney accents.
So called Classless accents.
And the latest tend . Actors adapting a slight lisp when pronouncing certain words..Very cool for RADA graduates to obtain work.

Exactly what I wanted to say.

Someone I know constantly uses ‘text’ as the past tense, as in ‘I text her yesterday and she text me back’.
I would say ‘texted’ but it’s a newish word when used as a verb. What do others say?

Bluebell I'm a pedant and quite like it when an adverb is used to qualify a verb rather than an adjective.
Errors of syntax annoy me more, starting with "between you and I". Ouch!

Maybe this would help.
In word processing , children are taught to choose suitable fonts for the work they are doing.
Computers list fonts.

Amazing, as in "you did amazing". Frequently occurs on TV game shows.
Also get, as in "can I get a single to .... please". Heard every day on the bus.

'enormity' when the applicable word would be 'immensity'.

An enormity isn't a very large quantity, it is a very bad/ outrageous/offensive action..

I say kid.
I don't give it a second thought.
If people think excuses bad behaviour from their children/kids, then I feel sorry for them.

A kid is a baby goat. Calling a child a baby goat is disrespectful. How can we expect children to have any respect for us (adults) if we persist in calling them baby goats; think of how goats are thought of generally to see what I mean.

To be fair, the the word "kid" to describe a child or teen has been in common use for well over a hundred years so maybe we can allow it to pass. The words "pup" "lamb" and "cub" are used in similar contexts and everyone understands why without feeling it's disrespectful.

I well educated friend always orders an expresso instead of espresso 🥴.

"think"when it should be "thing" as in"somethink" surprisingly common
