Do you knock or just walk in?

At our GP surgery you are summoned via a screen to both GP and nurse. For the past few years I’ve only needed to see a nurse, so since they’re evidently ready and waiting for you, I do just walk in, and say good morning/afternoon.

My doctor comes out to greet me. Our phlebotomist is a man dressed as a woman and called Miss …..,…. I’m finding this very strange cannot get my head around him/her 🤷‍♀️ Makes me feel very uncomfortable

Surely, as long as they can take your blood easily and comfortably, it really is totally immaterial how they dress.

All come to greet you at my surgery, I ve had to go to two other surgeries to see a physio lately and again they came out to greet me.

Are they good at their job?

The medical staff at our surgery all come into the waiting area and call the patients names. At previous GP surgeries they used the electronic screens to alert patients……in that case I used to knock on the door before entering, even if the door was ajar.

I was told that GPs like to come out so they can check how you walk or get up from.your chair. Can give them an idea of how you are.

That makes sense. DH had an appointment the other day, he has a bad knee. I think the doctor was checking how he walked.

Our GPS all come and collect us.

This was confusing to me - and I read it three times - as GPS (as in global positioning systems) ...I had some sort of "robot assistant" in my head!
🤣

I usually knock on a closed door before I enter. It a polite warning that someone is about to enter so gives the occupant time to prepare.

We had the screen system for yonks until recently, when it changed to them coming out to get you. Seems a waste of time to me if the rooms are clearly numbered.

But to answer the question, I've always knocked but don't wait for a reply.

I knock if the door is closed but just walk in and say hello if it is open.

Me too.

M0nica Fri 10-Jul-26 21:19:53

In our new surgery the doctor comes out and calls you. Our previous surgery had a tannoy system. I must say that my reaction there was as Greenfinch's. Knock if the door is shut, walk in without knocking if it is open.

Be pointless me knocking - I wouldn't hear the reply!!

I knock if the door is closed . If open I walk in .

Graphite Fri 10-Jul-26 16:16:08

My surgery has an LED display where the patient’s name and room to go to flashes up but I still knock and wait to be told to come in.

I always knock on a closed door whether it’s a domestic room, a room in a public building or a public loo - in case there’s someone in there who’s forgotten to lock the door.

Grandmabatty Fri 10-Jul-26 16:09:18

My doctor comes to the waiting room and greets me by name

Grammaretto Fri 10-Jul-26 16:01:28

Mine still walks out to call me and leads me in.

I too would knock. 9/10 our GPs pop out and collect us.

Sago Fri 10-Jul-26 15:56:04

It’s the polite thing to do.

Fallingstar Fri 10-Jul-26 15:49:45

I would knock. I just think it would be the thing to do.

labazs Fri 10-Jul-26 15:48:29

At my last Doctors surgery the GP used to come out and fetch you, so you just got up and followed him to the consulting room.
At my new surgery your name and room number comes up on the television screen in the waiting room.
When I go to the door of the room I always knock before going in, that was the way Mum did years ago in our old surgery when I was a child.
So I just wondered do you knock or just walk in?
