A thread for people who have been on GN a long time

I was sorting a few papers out yesterday and a writing pad sheet fluttered to the floor and on it it said just ‘December 2013’
and underneath that was a list of names, that I soon realised were GN posters. It was probably not long after I had joined GN and maybe me trying to remember names but I thought some old timers may be interested to have a look and see who they recognise,
It might set some memories off

MOnica, yes Greatnan was a regular when i arrived. She was.very welcoming and an interesting poster. No surprise to learn she’d led an interesting life. As you say, she lived in Switzerland and loved mountain walks. She was reported missing by gransnet friends. Mumsnet joined attempts to raise awareness and find her. Tragically she’d fallen walking and her body was found at the bottom of an incline.

Mamie

I have been here from the beginning. You missed out Elegran.

I don't post as often now, but I'm still around!

Greenfinch Mon 13-Jul-26 20:22:10

This was Greatnan.

J52 Mon 13-Jul-26 20:18:02

Yes I remember that tragedy. I can’t remember her exact name. So sad.

M0nica Mon 13-Jul-26 20:08:34

Has anyone mentioned Greatgranny/grandma, I cannot remember her exact name? She lived in France/Switzerland. What I do know is she was very independent but struck a close friendship with several people so when she stopped posting sddenly, after saying she was going for a walk in the mountains, members raised the alarm and as a result, sadly, her body was found at the bottom of a steepslope where she had obviously fallen. Perhaps one of those involved is stil on GN abd can cinfirm the details.

Hello Thisismyname1953.
I have no links with Wales (unfortunately, lovely country).
I'm actually in Devonshire, on the edge of Dartmoor.
My name is because I was raised with lots of chickens, even sharing their shed at night sometimes.
I've been on GN for a very long time and am now ancient and decrepit. 😁

I genuinely can’t remember now SueDonim

maddyone and I were I very regular contact at the time
Her post caused great upset with one member of the family though that was definite.

Maybe she continued to post and was banned ??? 🤷‍♀️
No idea really

SueDonim Mon 13-Jul-26 18:09:55

Why would that lead to her being banned, though, FGT?

Maddyone that’s it ! Thank you all. What a shame she was banned, can’t imagine why. I enjoyed her posts.

A family member recognised her and complained at being ‘outed’.

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 13-Jul-26 18:03:11

Very true Willow500 it’s scary where our days go sometimes!

Greenfinch Mon 13-Jul-26 17:56:06

A mystery solved MOnica. You are on my list upthread with your previous username. On Thursday14 Nov -13 at 16.08.38 you told us about a meal you made in a hurry many moons ago when you forgot to buy potatoes!

Mauriherb Mon 13-Jul-26 17:55:35

I'm a long time lurker but rarely post anything, although I read most of the threads. I remember a poster called Anya , she doesn't seem to be on here now unless she changed her name

silverlining48 Mon 13-Jul-26 17:41:00

Out of interest I checked and GN began in 2011.

M0nica Mon 13-Jul-26 17:34:46

I joined within a month or two of GN starting. My name then was FlicketyB, but I changed it later because someone close to me recognised my username.

No one has mentioned DurhamJen. She was dogmatic old school Labour, which when GN started made her stand out, but a lovely woman.

In the early days political discussions were far more free flowing and people were prepared to discuss subjects without feeling that they always had to stick to party policy and diktats. It led to really interesting discussions. Now, on political threads people seem so hidebound by party policy and seem afraid to argue with their own allegiance.

nadateturbe Mon 13-Jul-26 17:20:29

Don't recognise any of those, but I only joined in 2018 as annep.
Gransnet has helped keep me sane, as,I have M E. and am not very active.

I know I was here in 2012...I joined a group of GNs at the hotel by East Midlands Airport..I met Kitty Lester, Tegan....and sorry, forgotten the other names. I was about to divorce and GN members were very supportive..no trolls in those days!

Was it that long ago!!!!

Nightowl was there and, I think, Maw. There was a lady from Nottingham there too but I have forgotten her name.

Yes, I was there!
We did choose some glamorous venues didn’t we? 😂😂

I joined years ago and was quite an avid reader/contributor back in the day. I met up with a few in Doncaster when we lived there but we moved 6 years ago which also coincided with our retirement so I never really got back in the swing of things after that.

I recognise many of those on the list but many have joined since. I pop in from time to time and read through some threads but just don't seem to have the time I used to have which is often the way after retirement isn't it?! grin

Sorry. Wrong thread.

merlotgran Mon 13-Jul-26 16:14:53

Nothing it’s a quiet week.

gillyknits Mon 13-Jul-26 15:38:27

I have been on since nearly the beginning of GN and recognise so many of the names. I don’t post often but enjoy most subjects ( except politics)
I loved it when book club was running and we sometimes were lucky to get a free book to read and review. Also I won a couple of lovely competitions!
