Theatrelover people are killed by all sizes of vehicles, e-scooters, e-bikes, cycles, horses and even cows.

Surely we all need to take responsibility for our own actions and decisions.

Like I said upthread I will not be guilt tripped into explaining and or apologising for the model of any of our vehicles.

I'm not guilt tripping anyone, and none of my comments have been made directly to anyone on this thread. Surely, people are allowed to express their concerns? There is evidence that pedestrians are more likely (20-50%) to be killed after being struck by a SUV than if struck by a smaller car. Children are at higher risk (some studies say 80%) of being killed by a SUV because a SUV is more likely to strike their head.

I agree with you completely about the danger from e-bikes and e-scooters, and I am probably more likely to be hit by one of those than a car where I live.

I was going to say that I'm not likely to be killed by a horse in central London, but there are stables near me so we sometimes see rehearsals for the Lord Mayor's Parade, mounted police, and horse-drawn funeral carriages, so you never know......

Something else I have noticed - people are suddenly zooming out of side roads and pushing themselves over the white lines - before they stop. Is this because they have a longer bonnet and can't therefore see. I wish I had a penny for every time I have had to swerve because of this. Fortunately my survival instinct is quite strong.

Suv's and electric vehicles are far heavier - where do you think all these pot holes are coming from? That and a lack of maintenance. I also think that a lot of people have no spatial awareness, or is it that they don't want to scratch their cars on the bushes because they are leased? I have a little car. I often feel intimidated by these big ones.

I think it's the enormous lorries that damage our roads not so much the cars.
Our local florist has deliveries from Holland. The delivery truck is massive and clearly not built for our small windy, hilly roads.

Reasons.

Lots more Electric and hybrid vehicles. Which l am told, need more space for batteries.

Family Status symbols. My Chelsea Tractor is bigger, more.flashy than yours. We are high income people and have arrived.

SUV's. Knock on effect and heavily influenced by American lifestyle, TV programmes and entitlement and trashy celeb culture.

Any of these vehicles over a certain length should pay more in parking fees. And because of their weight. They are also wrecking and crushing pavements.

Not one of the pro-SUVs on this thread has acknowledged the evidence that pedestrians and cyclists are likely to be more seriously injured or killed by SUVs than by smaller cars. Neither have they acknowledged that their heavy cars are causing much damage to the road structure which everyone will have to pay for via their taxes. Someone upthread has mentioned that the drivers of smaller cars are often blinded because the headlights of the larger cars shine right into their eyes.

I would have more respect for the drivers of SUVs if they had acknowledged that those who don't drive these huge cars have genuine concerns.

I remember when the highest status vehicles were nifty little sports cars.
Now we have gone to the other extreme.
Perhaps this trend will go full circle and in another few years people will be buying bubble cars!

Ha Ha, we cover both extremes here at Gravy Grange, DH with his 4 X 4 hybrid and my soft top sporty number.

I've been reading the thread as it intrigued me why everything is getting bigger, not just cars.
The packed train yesterday was full of big luggage with nowhere to put it.
Why do people travel with so much stuff!?

I drive a tiny car . The only thing against it is that I get overtaken all the time. When I drove a large car (not my choice) I was treated with more respect on the roads.

Buggies on buses are huge too. I had McLaren buggies which folded quickly into an umbrella shape for my 4. Now they are like off-road vehicles.

Could it be that people themselves are bigger?

Oh and as for their weight, electric cars are on average 20-30% heavier than petrol/diesel vehicles.

People are getting bigger, made to fit.

I think a lot of people are just envious of someone with a larger car than they have. I have a medium sized SUV which I chose simply because it is higher than the saloons I sampled and was the only car I could get in and out of easily with my troublesome back.

I find that most cannot drive these mahoosive cars! They drive in the centre of the roads! Stopping traffic! They can’t park in bays, as they are too big for the ‘average’ sized bays!
And they think everyone has to stop for them

Its ridiculous to lump all large vehicle drivers together, just as it would be to dismiss small cat drivers as elderly fusspots who pootle around at 23mph, holding up traffic.

We have a small car that we use for local journeys and a bigger one for long trips. I parked the little car in the middle of the lines at the hotel where I go regularly for a class. I came back to find a huge car parked on either side so close that I was unable to get into my car without squeezing into the passenger side and clambering into the driving seat, which was not easy. I then found backing out was near impossible because a huge car was parked behind me leaving little room to turn. I had to get out of the car again via the passenger seat to go to reception to get the car moved. Fortunately it was easy to track the driver down as it was the local meeting of a car club! I let you guess which!
