What colours remind you of your childhood home?

I’ve counted up eleven childhood homes and don’t remember a single colour in any of them except the last, where my parents painted my bedroom a beautiful pale yellow while I was in hospital.

Paint colours: Fawn, beige, mushroom, yellowish cream.
Utility furniture (just after the war) stained wood.
Long red velvet curtains replacing long gingery coloured curtains patterned with oak leaves in the dining room, patterned green ones everywhere else.
Brown/reddish Turkey type carpets downstairs, upstairs lino with rugs, probably green.
Stair runner with brass stair rods .

All my childhood Mum and Dad lived in a council house,my memory is of the ceiling in the loo.
Dad wallpapered it in a dark blue paper with silver stars- he said he wanted to feel at one with the universe when on the throne.😊 Bless him, he had a wicked sense of humour.

My mother’s favourite colour for soft furnishings and curtains was always green, so that was what we had for the whole of my childhood and teens, 1940s and’50s. Paintwork was always white, carpets always plain.

When I was fourteen I was promoted to a bigger bedroom and chose my own colours - curtains were coppery brocade, walls pale duck-egg blue. I can’t remember the floor, probably a dark haircord carpet.

I remember the walls of my childhood home were covered with anaglypta wallpaper painted over several times, usually brown or beige.
And the blooming Lino everywhere, brown or dark blue with rugs over the top though I seem to remember carpet at some point, at least in the living room, highly patterned and a mix of burgundy, green and beige.

I didn’t really have a childhood home as we were always on the move and mainly lived in RAF married quarters but my grandparents’ house was our haven between postings.

The outside woodwork was painted pine green and I would get told off for looking for paint bubbles on hot days so I could pop them.

The kitchen walls were butter cream and the only room not papered with various unremarkable patterns.

I’ve always loved the combination of green and cream especially in the garden.

As with others, brown and green. Lino on the floor. Big dark brown sideboard. Don't remember much in the way of bright colour. But everyone's home seemed the same in the 60s / early 70s.

Mother redecorated the lounge. We had one of those wooden dados at waist height. Above the dado was white with beautiful pink roses. Below were white and silver stripes. Probably quite fashionable for the 1960s. My inseparable best friend and I walked our dogs together. One morning I invited her with her border collie into our lounge for a reason I can't remember - it was only to be a few moments in and out. Her dog unfortunately chose the occasion to cock his leg on the lower part of the newly-decorated wall by the kitchen.The catastrophe was immediately forgiven and a damp cloth produced and the dog , of course, not blamed. What a wonderful example to me and my friend.

My first memories of my childhood home were in the late fifties. With Matt emulsion paint on the living room and kitchen walls.

Mt mother thought Eau de nil, a light coloured bluey green paint was lovely. And Jonquil a buttery yellow paint, really brightened up the dark kitchen.

Think there might have been Magnolia in the bedrooms.

My first thought was Orange.

Sometimes at night when I am going to sleep, or, if I wake in the middle of the night, I go through the houses I knew as a child, ours, my gran's, and my godmother's. So much small detail comes back to you when all is quiet. I find it restful and heart warming.

Avocado green and gold in the living room and dining room. Red and brown in the play/TV room. Harvest yellow in the kitchen. My room was green, pink and purple and I had apple green furniture.

My parents didn't like anything but white walls.
The pale apple on the chimney breast wall in the sitting room was much debated! 🤣

Lots of brown, both in furniture and (non-fitted) carpets. Grey and yellow lino in the kitchen; hard, red tiles in the scullery.
And a brilliant white living room ceiling whenever it was painted - my mother was a heavy smoker and usually the ceiling was a vaguely off-yellow shade to reflect that!

My Dad had this idea to use graining on the woodwork, to give it a fancy look. He did it himself and we thought it was awful but daren’t tell him.

My father cut out some huge (dinner plate size) roses to decorate the wall next to my bed when I was a baby.
I remember those pink roses blooming in an arch (until I was a teenager). I don't really know where they were from. He worked in window display before I was born so could have been anywhere.

My dad was a photographer, and by the late 1960s he was using colour. Naturally, he would sometimes take family photos in the house on special occasions like Christmas and birthdays. Over the years I will have seen those many times, so that might be why I can still vividly 'see' the carpet.

And old curtains were always kept to use as dust cloths when decorating, so they were around for more years than I care to remember (I'm talking several decades!).

The more I think about it, the more I realise that it is not at all surprising that I can still picture these things.

By contrast, my memories of the house we left in 1967, when I was 6, are all in black and white, just like any of our photos from that era!

I had a pink candlewick bedspread that I loved. I couldn't resist pulling the threads out though. Mum was cross but blamed the manufacturer! I also had pink wallpaper with ballerinas on it.

I remember my bedroom wallpaper. It had big flowers on it in various shades of purple. In the living room we had a brown and gold three piece suite and an awful patterned carpet.

I still have my Mum's mid century dining table and chairs, along with the sideboard. The only change I have made is to reupholster the chairs because they were upholstered in an awful tobacco brown leatherette. It's till in pristine condition.

Navy blue and yellow. I fancied myself as a bit of a style Queen at the age of 13. My lovely Dad painted my bedroom walls yellow and the paintwork navy blue.
I thought I was the bee's knees!

Byown orange and green in the70s

My parents wanted a feature wall in their kitchen painted flamenco (rich orange). The decorators mistook the name for flamingo! The pink was painted over.

Brown shiny Lino throughout, green stripey bedspreads and khaki, dads uniform.

All white walls, except my bedroom which had yellow Alice in Wonderland wall paper, and the sitting room, which had one wall with wallpaper of blue birds. My mum favoured plain navy and other blue furnishing, and carpets, I can’t remember anything brown or orange, or green, even the kitchen had a grey tiled floor. I didn’t think about it at the time, but looking back she was not on trend, she did her own thing.

Different tones of vanilla / winter white / rustic elements / wooden floors / treasures that inspire & diverse enclaves
