Bottled water

We’re lucky to have great tasting water, thank you Affinity Water! I bought a SodaStream and now make my own sparkling water, so no need for all those plastic bottles, although I must admit to having a few bottles in a cool dark place in case of emergencies.

I shoild also own up to having 24 large bottles in the garage. Just in case.

Best keep an eye on the use by date or you will need to water the garden with it. The plastic degenerates and gets into the water.

The only time I have bottled water is when the supply stops ... rather frequently! ... and Welsh Water kindly deliver me loads.

I only buy water if it's been hand-cupped out of a river by virgins, filtered through their linen petticoats and carried down the mountain in oak barrels to Click and Collect in Tesco car park.

No,drinking water comes through your kitchen tap from the rising main. You should not drink water from eg bathroom taps which are fed from the tank in your loft

Ah, thanks MawsRosie. That explains it, and I didn't realise that your kitchen water comes from the mains. All our cold water taps have mains water and it's only hot water which comes from a tank (unless you have a combi boiler, of course).

We fill a bottle from the tap several times a day and keep in the fridge. We live in a southern water area. The water is lovely. When we lived in outer London the water didn’t taste as pure and nice. We also buy fizzy water to have with cordial and soda water to make spritzers. When I think about it, we drink a lot of water one way or another.

I prefer the chalky tap water across the southern downlands, but I do get English carbonated water occasionally.
I do feel there's something wrong with transporting water in lorries, especially from Italy and France.

I watched a tv programme about bottled water some time ago, lots of bottled waters were tested and some had very high mineral content.
Conclusion was that as bottled water wasn’t tested you could be consuming dangerously high levels of minerals.

Nothing wrong with the tap water here in the Midlands. It is quite hard so we have to put up with limescale on the taps etc but fine to drink. I do buy soda water, I'm in two minds whether to get a Sodastream type machine for that.

Sodapop can't you take a magnesium supplement with tap water instead of buying water? It might be cheaper.

Tap water mostly for me, but I go to a spring and fill a good few bottles whenever I'm in the area. I always feel its doing me the world of good, but thats probably wishful thinking.

Guilty as charged here as well Luckygirl3 I drink bottled water with added magnesium to combat frequent cramp.
I do take your point about plastic bottles. Maybe I should have a rethink.

No tank in my attic. All water comes from the mains.

I don't think the Chalybeate Spring would supply many of us these days. 😮

There was a big house fire last week and we were told that the water would have little bits in it so boil or bottled.

There is a thread about this on mumsnet and I am kind boggled that there are people who never drink tap water but buy all their water in plastic bottles all the time.
Am I alone in finding this quite extraordinary?

The blame lies with Perrier. They started the craze in the 70s
Together with the new technology Re plastics.
The only time we have used bottled water was one winter in Spain with the motohome. All the standby taps had been turned off because of a water shortage.

Good job you don't live in Tunbridge Wells then. 😂 Three weeks without water in December 2025 and a few outages since then. I keep a supply.

Yesterday my tap water was yellow in colour so I drank bottled water until it cleared

It was the bottled water makers who started the craze for ‘hydration’ and everyone carrying water around all the time. They invented the false figure of people needing 8 glasses (or whatever it was) of water daily.
Strange that humans have survived since the Stone Age just relying on thirst to tell them when to drink.

I should qualify my statement about water all over Europe being safe - occasionally there are issues such as after very heavy rain or contamination in a reservoir and advice is given to boil water.
