My grandaughter is going to have a baby soon and I presume he/ she will have a middle name. I hope so. It is one of my regrets that my husband did not want his daughter's to have a middle name as he thought it was only for " posh" people. I have a middle name and I am not posh I told him . I did however make sure our son had a middle name but I still regret our daughters didn't

The majority of people I have ever met have had middle names, whether they were manual labourers or Lords of the Realm. Before everyone was known to all and sundry by their first name. everyone would be referred to as Mr/Mrs/Miss. A N Other - and it was almost always 'A N' Other, rarely 'A' Other.

I sometimes look at Mumsnet’s Baby names, just to be amazed at the awful/bizarre names which people use now. On there it is assumed to be universal to give babies a middle name.
I don’t see the point of adding a name which will never be used, mine is ghastly but nobody’s ever asked what it is.
My brothers and husband had only one name and we gave two of our children two each and the other two only one. They’ve never complained.
