At the top of the hour, instead of say 12 o’clock or Noon.

“She slid into his DMs”. Had to ask my son what this meant. Still not sure. Thought DMs meant Doc Martin boots.

High school. We have secondary schools.

Guys!! Overly. Majorly. Normalcy. Like. Not actually a word but a rising note at the end of a sentence - makes it appear as a question.

I love "My bad"! So succinct and quite apt where an outright apology isn't really called for.

Agree.. I have used it, it covers a lot.
It's obviously a "Marmite" word.

The optics - rather than the appearance.

My bad

Blue sky thinking
I may be wrong here, but the pronunciation of sixth. I think it should be six-th, but lots of people say sick-th. It's spelt with an x, so why is it not sounded?!!!!!

Super. I was super angry.

yogitree Sat 25-Jul-26 10:49:11

This 'like' business Chestnut.

"Although 'like' has become part of everyday language. It's like the most used and the most terrible."

I understand your horror, and have even found myself doing it. My family do it "He was like... to explain what someone did, said or to describe their behaviour"

I need to catch myself before opening my mouth!

Another Americanism?

Oh crikey … I’d forgotten “gotten”.

Drives me mad😡

Witzend Sat 25-Jul-26 09:56:10

‘Early doors’ makes me want to slap anyone who says or writes it.
‘Step foot’ instead of ‘set foot’ (just seen elsewhere) is another. I don’t feel like slapping them, but I privately judge them as ignorant or stupid or both.

Oreo Sat 25-Jul-26 09:55:58

It sounds Irish.

Never heard this 🤔

Chestnut Sat 25-Jul-26 09:54:47

So many of these things give me the ick.

Starting everything with 'so' is definitely still on the rise. Listen to people being interviewed on TV. They usually start explaining themselves with 'So....'

'My bad' is awful, and also putting 'shade' on someone.

Young people using 'sick' is probably the worst.😬

Although 'like' has become part of everyday language. It's like the most used and the most terrible.

Oreo Sat 25-Jul-26 09:54:46

Lots of these things, if not all, are American isms, whether they become permanent or fleeting we shall have to see.

I hate "can I get" too. It's often in a café or bar...

I want to say yes, "cook it yourself".

LizzieDrip Sat 25-Jul-26 09:37:52

“Uptick” … what’s wrong with increase🤷‍♀️

“Empath”

Oh, and definitely ‘the ick”

I’m sure more will come to mind …

Bukkie Sat 25-Jul-26 09:20:33

I have not heard, "My bad" yet! I will listen out for it. I only heard the phrase, "It's the optics of it." recently and didn't understand it. I hate, "Can I get...." It is "Can I please have.... or " Please may I have....."
