Do people still stamp their feet in anger?

Re-reading Agatha Christie, I cannot help noticing some of the changes that have occurred in our daily lives, since she wrote her first books.

One small detail: a nicely brought up young girl actually stamps her foot upon being annoyed by something said to her.

This made me wonder, if anyone actually does this any more?

To the best of my knowledge and belief I have never seen anyone do so (apart perhaps from two year olds in tantrums).

I have certainly never dared do it, after being reproved at the age of four or five by my mother, who said, "Don't stamp your foot at me, young woman!" in a tone of voice that clearly warned me that the next time I did so, I would be sent to bed without my dinner!

So, the question is, does anyone actually do this now, or would it be totally unacceptable adult behaviour?

I witnessed a little girl aged about 6 (going on her missing teeth) stamping her foot at lunch in a cafe today. She wanted something and was told no, and then decided to have a tantrum. As a retired Headteacher I was a little surprised as it’s a behaviour associated with much younger children.

I turn into a bratish toddler when roused and stomp about like Rumpelstiltskin. Mr ILD just rolls his eyes and let's me get on with it.
I'm not proud of this behaviour but......whatever! 😚

I own up to stamping my feet when our AC were younger and at home.

They veered towards being astounded the first time round, to finding it hilarious on subsequent occasions which defused the situation that had made me so cross. (This was usually arguments between the boys, or their baby sister winding them up)

Now they are parents, they tell their children, especially if they play up whilst they are out that they (AC) will stamp their feet like Grandma used to do!

I actually found it rather therapeutic, and as a tool for handling both children and grandchildren rather effective as a threat.

I think this was more to do with them thinking I was going to embarrass them…

I'm going to try it! Sounds interesting.

I did once work with someone who would stamp her feet if things weren't going her way. It was like dealing with a toddler!

I didn't do it when I was little, apart from when mum said we couldnt watch The Banana Splits once.
I flung myself on the sofa. smile

Yes maybe when I was five, then fling myself head first into the sofa- like a right drama queen. kind of out-grown that now thank goodness or we would have no sofa left 😂

I'm sure I had a hamster (or gerbil) who used to stamp one foot, too.

MissAdventure Mon 27-Jul-26 22:36:22

Oh and rabbits.

MissAdventure Mon 27-Jul-26 22:35:48

Stampers are in good company.
Elephants, deer, zebras, horses, rhinos, chimpanzees, skunks, also do it. smile

DGS2 used to stamp a single foot, but more from frustration than anger.

MissAdventure Mon 27-Jul-26 21:40:45

I think i read somewhere that moose do it.
Stamp - not slam the phone down.
It must be connected to our animal instincts.

Im annoyed about something tonight, could stamp both feet, and not fall over because I’ve run out of gin… adding to my annoyance 🙁

valdali Mon 27-Jul-26 21:23:58

Horses do it too - and rhinos....

FriedGreenTomatoes2 Mon 27-Jul-26 21:00:55

Never done it nor seen it done. 🤷‍♀️

Just a random thought. Do people still just tap their foot in time to a song or tune or are they more inclined to move with music these days?

I saw a video of a baby skunk. It was furious! So funny when it stamped it's little feet.

My DD had a female rabbit who was very bad tempered. She used to thump with one of her back legs, just like the rabbit in 'Bambi'.(The rabbit not my DD)

I haven't done it for years, but I do stamp my feet (sometimes accompanied by a naughty word) when I'm very cross.

MissAdventure Mon 27-Jul-26 19:53:02

I recommend it.
No naughty words, no family fall outs or walking on eggshells for ten years after the event, and it feels surprisingly good.

I think it's an out of the blue happening though; you couldn't plan it, or schedule it in your diary for some future date. smile

😂😂😂 MissAdventure.

I haven’t even seen toddlers do it tbh

We're you in your own during this, er, event MissAdventure?

No, i had two smirking grandsons watching my performance.

Oldnproud Mon 27-Jul-26 17:43:34

I seem to recall one of more of my dgc stamping their feet with anger as toddlers, but haven't seen any adults do it

grin
I did a couple of warning stamps, then a little dance type of stamp, with both feet (and no gin)
