My husband has just told me he wants a divorce after 30 years of marriage. We're both 60. I've talked him into giving it another 6 months, which he has reluctantly agreed to provided I have counselling - he says I'm not happy and that makes him unhappy, but he can't "fix" me so I need therapy.
He's partly right in that I haven't been happy for a while, but I think that's more about approaching 60, feeling disappointed with myself and where I am in my life etc rather than anything to do with him.
He's refused to participate in couples counselling - he says this is all on me (which is obviously nonsense, as there are two of us in this relationship).
I've started counselling with a view to accepting what I can't change, letting go of the past and feeling happy with myself. That will put me in a stronger position for the future, whether or not it's with him. At the moment, I'm unsure if I even want to stay with him, but if at the end of the 6 months we both want to try to make a go of it, I'm going to insist on couples counselling.
My other problem is that if we split up we won't have enough equity in our house to buy two separate homes. I still work full time on a good salary but I don't want to take on another mortgage and work until past state retirement age (67 for me). I was hoping to cut my hours in the next year or two and retire a couple of years after that. We had all sorts of plans to get a camper van, sell the house and buy a flat.
I just don't know what to do. I feel I need good solid advice from someone with knowledge about pensions and property, specialising in later life, but I have no idea where to find such a person. I live in West Yorkshire.
Can anyone help?
