The solar eclipse on Wednesday 12th August

My DS and his family sent some amazing pictures from the Cruise he is on off the coast of Spain.
Great experience for his 2 young daughters.

We sat in the garden expecting something special but nothing happened. It got slightly darker but that’s all. Birds still singing. What an anti-climax.

Very disappointing in N. Bucks. Tried with a colander and pin box, both useless. Didn’t notice it go dark at all and all the birds seemed quite happy flying about. OI will just have to remember the last one in 1999.

I used the colander, but all I could see was …colander!

DH kept saying it worked, but not for me.

A neighbour came round with a Blue Peter cornflake box effort, saying how great it was.

Not to me, still couldn’t make out anything.

Oh well, roll on 2090!

The wonder is that although the sun was up to 92% covered, the amount of light that was still there. It shows how all powerful it is.

But it did get very dim here and the light was different to anything else.

We saw it upstairs via pinhole and colander and white card. You had to be outside I think to see how the light changed - it’s not the same as normal dusk. The herring gulls and wood pigeons round here (south coast West Sussex) didn’t shut up though! It was lovely to see so many people heading for the beach and out in gardens, some with eclipse glasses and one with a telescope. I’ll be too sleepy to look for meteor shower tonight - I’ve been out all day. It was lovely 😊

I won’t be awake for the Perseids either, but daughter and children in Turkey said they will 😏.

An excuse for a party!
Neighbours had a pack of the specs and yes I saw the partial eclipse.
Then there was cloud cover so we resorted to wine and grub.

Too cloudy here to see anything. Got a bit darker and cooler, but that was it.

If I hadnt known there was going to be an eclipse, I wouldn't have noticed a thing. As it was, it just felt like the sky had become a little hazy. I wasn't expecting it to be great, but was still expecting more than that.

What a non-event 😫

We had bright sunshine no cloud. Fantastic with the glasses. We had 5 pairs (one each) and we noticed a family of neighbours on the front trying the colander method - so we passed over 2 pairs of ours … “Eh mum these are brilliant! You can see the orange of the sun now!” said the teenager. It felt nice to share as they were delighted and thanked us profusely!

Bit of a damp squid here in Bedfordshire, sun was just as bright as any other evening disappointed.

90.8% where I was viewing. Tried the colander and pinhole trick, both hopeless. Then viewed through eclipse glasses and saw it clearly at the optimum time. Shared them with a couple near me who had been trying the colander trick. We were all really chuffed.

1999 eclipse seen from the top of a small mountain near Salzburg- was properly surreal. It went cold and completely dark , the wind changed and the birds went quiet. Today - a partial eclipse from the top of a local hill- was disappointing! Several little flocks of geese took to the air as they usually do just before dusk. It cooled down a little, but really did not get dark. Our eclipse glasses- ordered a week ago - arrived just in time!

A bit of a non event in South Wales , very disappointing

Our lovely neighbour gave us two pairs of eclipse glasses, daughter took one pair to watch with friends and we shared the other pair.

Margiknot, I watched the 1999 eclipse from the garden here with daughter and it did seem more eerie than today's eclipse. It was good but not spectacular.
Doubt we'll be here for the next one!
