All done in a jokey, jokey way Oh let’s rejoice in the climate change, nice to have a decent hot summer (not a direct quote ) and I believe either he or Farage then said, we can grow more grapes and beat the French at wine making (again not a direst quote)

I’m reminded of the story of chicken lickin when I read some of these comments

The population in the western world needn't worry about food we have the money to buy globally, it might cost more but we are not going to go hungry.

Cost of basic food has never been lower the proportion of in one spent on good is low compared with the third world where most of their income is spent on food.

In WW2 the ration was tiny compared to to the amount we eat today when the main health problem is obesity.

I agree David49. However the more extreme weather in the UK caused by climate change increases the challenges and risks for farmers and wine growers and increases prices for the general population.

Tice stated that trying to stop climate change is arrogant and urged people seeking to use humour to stop focussing on *doom and gloom and instead should simply enjoy the summer weather saying it could improve English wine production. He questions the evidence that net zero policies can help control climate trends and criticises green subsidies.

We all love a joke but making jokes about climate change- did not chime as very funny for many. i

Tice has received a huge back lash this week. In my book he was simply showing himself to be arrogant and reckless, tone deaf and imbecilic. Plus ca change....

That the lottery of any growing enterprise to much or too little rain, same with sun too much or not enough, too much frost as well, every grower and farmer has to cope with that.

That's the way it always is

Cossy

Fallingstar

A gross lack of tact whilst fire fighters are still fighting fires and people have lost their homes, not to mention the loss of huge tracts of precious countryside and wildlife.
Fiddling whilst the UK burns.

I completely agree. They’re totally out of touch. I love humour, but humour when people are dying solely due to the intense heat, or losing their homes, isn’t humour, it’s sheer stupidity!

I also am in agreement. Tice looked like a bad comedian whilst Jenrick's expression alongside was a masterclass in trying to keep a straight face, with a forced smile whilst realising how foolish Tice was sounding.

To gloss over the downside of this year's intense heat and how it has lead to loss of homes, increased deaths in the elderly, pressure on HNS services and staff, and across the board poor food crops. This will increase food prices and food inflation as a result. To jest about the UK wine industry as a huge benefit to focus on is short sighted at best and politically damaging at worst.

It hasn't all been rosy for the UK wine industry anyway. The hot summer has led to pushing sugar levels up in the grapes and advanced ripening. The picking schedules are weeks ahead of usual. Also the prolonged dry spells have led to drought stress on the UK vines and smaller grapes with less juice per bunch. Growers have also had to execute over cropping and yellowing leaves in the drought to protect vine health.

The current type of vines in the UK were planted for the usual cool climate summer that leads to wine style of light, crisp and high acidity wine. High sugar levels alter the brand. Plus the existing vines are have proved harder to maintain in the Mediterranean style summer we have experienced this year. All these factors have lead to higher maintenance costs, greater vine loss, change in outcome taste and the consequence will higher prices.

Climate Change is happening we will change with it, "we" the global population is doing nothing about it, global emissions are still rising. It's a joke for the UK to have a net Zero target when we are simply importing from others that are still burning coal, it's laughable.

We will adapt to the changes as humans have done over thousands of years, for the UK it will be more Aircon, more hot climate crops. Unless we get serious globally and reduce consumption, which I have zero confidence in, there is no alternative.

Amendment: Tice is off with the fairies. Translation: Tice is completely out of touch with real life.

Just a few points
Farage et al represent a legitimate point of view held by many people in this country, yet the mainstream media do NOT give them much space
Climate change has always been a 'thing' - we learnt this at school. Vines were grown in Northumbria in Roman times. There are indeed some awful things we are doing to this earth but heating it up through carbon emissions isn't one of them - this is a viewpoint held by many brave scientists who have lost their jobs through opposing the 'narrative.'
Even if the scaremongering were true, Britain's Net Zero policy will do no good whatever and will bring Britain to its knees, while China and others flourish - but a lot of people are profiting through this policy. As usual, follow the money.
It is tragic that fires have done so much damage to people and their homes but blame the arsonists and the unwise re-wilders, NOT human-induced global warming.
I always feel it's a good idea to weigh things up before getting behind any narrative however much it may be pushed by the media.

Seems like we managed to survive other catastrophic events the mainstream scientists were predicting
Such as
1960s Overpopulation Warnings: Biologists and mainstream outlets heavily promoted fears of mass starvation
The Coming Ice Age (1970s): During the early 1970s
Resource Depletion Deadlines: Predictions Again made in the 1970s
Of course we had the apocalyptic Acid rain scare that kept everyone in doors
Can’t remember how many hundreds of millions died from those scientific theories
I thinking on the basis of the success of the scientific view that we will survive the climate change
I wonder what the next calamity will be

Plevey08 Wed 19-Aug-26 18:27:25

Speaking of wine I wondered if Tim Montgomerie, recently suspended from Reform and on Newsnight last night, had had a few glasses before being interviewed.

Fylde Coast that should be

orly Wed 19-Aug-26 18:05:28

trying to reverse it. Here on the Flyer coast there is substantial and effective investment in improved sea defences whereas in others they are just letting the sea claim the land and any properties on it

orly Wed 19-Aug-26 18:02:39

It's not so much an anti Climate Change comment but a statement about being pragmatic about CC rather that idealistic. I would much rather listen to Richard Tice than that idiot Ed Milk and who has wasted £billions of our money on vanity projects. Richard Tice Sainsbury's some time ago that Climate Change was already here and we need to adapt to it rather than tr

Jaberwok Wed 19-Aug-26 17:42:46

Once we've reached net zero what then?! Unless the big polluters all join in with the same zealotry, what we do won't make a haporth of difference. I love hot weather.and as advised by R.T, have enjoyed our rare lovely summer, as I did in 1976.

Frogoet Wed 19-Aug-26 17:34:05

Of course you can disagree with their rediculous policies. In Norfolk they’re cutting any climate change measures to save money and cutting the social care budget.
It’s happening and mainly due to people our age who are ignorant and bigoted.
Led by the Daily Fail and awful public figures pretending to be journalists.

ExaltedWombat Wed 19-Aug-26 17:18:59

Along with frogface he’s scum of the earth etc. etc.
But, having said that, is he actually denying climate change? Or just recognising that as everyone seems to have agreed it’s Just Too Much Trouble to do anything about it, we might as well just lie back and enjoy?

fancythat Wed 19-Aug-26 15:59:08

Agreed.

They all think they are on "the world stage" once they become Leader.
Not sure whether Mr Burnham will think like that.
Probably.

monami Wed 19-Aug-26 15:56:05

i think politicians try to be seen as the worlds keepers , do gooders, can they not see that our dot of an island will not make a scrap of difference if we go green, can they not see the huge continents not interested in green, please someone have the courage to tell them

Visgir1 Wed 19-Aug-26 15:51:01

I'm in the Sunny South and lots around me, including one that produces amazing fizz.
I was in Raffles in Singapore we had treated ourselves to afternoon tea, the Fizz they served was from the Vineyard 10 minutes away from home.

fancythat Wed 19-Aug-26 15:47:21

When was the last time a thread was started about the Lib Dems?
I have no idea. And no idea how many MPs they have, and what their policies are any more.

fancythat Wed 19-Aug-26 15:46:10

To be fair, I do think posters talking about them, help them out!

Personally I am a bit fed up of all the threads started about them, one way and another.

Not a dig at you BlueBelle or any particular poster. But I am well past thinking about them personally.
Well, I do a bit. But I think Social media in this certain respect, is it's own enemy.

Olivebranch Wed 19-Aug-26 15:41:29

I don’t support Reform but millions of people do. They may even win the next election. You can’t assume moral superiority just because you don’t like them.

Pilgrimandrew Wed 19-Aug-26 14:57:59

There are more than two jn Devon. Don't forget Sharpham, they produce some fabulous wines

JenniRen Tue 18-Aug-26 17:16:05

Australian posters must be well aware of the dangers of forest fires as they've coped with them for far longer than us.
Of course, the Aboriginal peoples knew how to deal with fire and more recently firefighters and farmers who have vast experience. Perhaps we can learn from them.

Prevention is better than dealing with the aftermath and we need harsher penalties for those who deliberately start fires in such conditions.

It should be simple enough to ban the sale of anything which is potentially liable to set off a fire, especially fireworks, which should never be on sale to the general public in my opinion.

BlueBelle Tue 18-Aug-26 15:13:10

Do people like Tice/ Farage and their followers, really not understand or care about the climate change
You are speaking quite glibly Nana8 but you’re in a country that will probably frazzled you already have your big share of forest fires etc …never mind, when some countries dry up the inhabitants can flee to Australia that has loads of empty
room !!! You ll all love that
Trees that are burning down are needed to keep us breathing we are in VERY big trouble and it’s happening much faster than expected.
