Fireworks!

Going off right now!

Why? We live in a terraced house, in streets of terraced houses, with tiny gardens.

We have four dogs in our house, two very reactive.

I just do not understand people.

Aside from the noise and pollution, despite two rainfalls in the last few days everything is very dry still.

Why oh why are some people so utterly selfish and irresponsible?

Since last week there have been some going off every night here.

Desdemona Sun 06-Sept-26 18:16:28

Round my way you would struggle to know which drug dealer was letting off the fireworks!!

Stansgran Sun 06-Sept-26 14:05:58

@Cossy I stopped at four dogs. I’m impressed. Walking four dogs every day and four loads of poop bags to dispose of. I love fireworks but think they should be kept to Bonfire Night. I’ve been kept awake in India by all night fireworks at a wedding. It didn’t help that I was sleeping on a foam layer on a table.

Not looking forward to October/November. 3 cats and a new pup, who ran and hid yelping when Farage’s pathetic little display went off on tv news.

Where are you nana8? May move there.

Australia. Fireworks have been banned for many years except for the big displays by Councils or States. Partly because of the fire risk. We don’t have Bonfire night, of course, no one knows what it even means! New Years Eve there are fireworks at Sydney Harbour Bridge and in Melbourne town centre, very spectacular.Like Trafalgar Square.

As our summers are obviously becoming drier, I think there is should be a move towards banning firework sales to individuals. As well as the risk of fire and the disturbance they cause to animals and some people, they are dangerous in the wrong hands as every A&E department will tell you on Nov 5th.

Absolutely. They should not be sold to the general public. People are getting more and more nasty and violent. Teenagers (some of them) do all sorts of crazy things now and seem to have no empathy for their victims, so fireworks are not something they should be able to get hold of.

If fireworks are to be banned, I hope yapping, barking dogs are banned also. The latter cause far more annoyance here on a far more regular basis, as in every evening and early morning.

Four dogs in a house with a tiny garden?

Hearing dogs barking, yapping or howling in your own home must be absolutely awful. I'm very lucky, we have a dog nearby who howls a bit but rarely. If it happened every day for hours I'd go crazy. However, you'd need to take that up with your landlord or local council depending on what type of property it is.

Just ban them full stop!
I think bonfire night is dying out anyway.
Since Covid we have them going off in the early hours. I mean who’s celebrating at three in the morning?
They go nuts on Nextdoor because of this issue.

Jaxjacky Sat 05-Sept-26 12:08:26

I agree eazybee we have two near us, for at least fifteen hours a day.

nanna8 Sat 05-Sept-26 11:58:39

They are illegal here and you would have a police car arriving at your door if you let off private fireworks. Only public permit ones are allowed, usually at Christmas and New Year only.

I would like them banned for use by the public. Only organised, fully approved events with fireworks should be allowed.

Absolutely…

People can be so thoughtless and selfish.

Bazza Wed 02-Sept-26 16:45:53

I think the selling them to the public should be banned, they are such a nuisance to so many people and terrify animals. I’m not just talking about domestic pets, but they terrify farm animals as well. Yes, they can look spectacular but why do they have to be so noisy? They can be made to be silent, so why not? I’d be happy for them to be used just for public displays.

you have forgotten you were once a child or teen ,

No, absolutely not, but when I was a child/teen, fireworks were only available for bonfire night or for special organised events such as the late summer gala which ended with a firework display at 9 pm, funded by the fairground people who were there at the same time. Nowadays, fireworks seem to be for sale throughout the year and anyone can get hold of them. It’s got out of control and needs addressing.

Samsara1 Wed 02-Sept-26 14:46:15

It's been quiet here all summer but as we move into the darker evenings it seems to be a way people celebrate now. Very expensive I think but I do love fireworks. We don't have any animals or pets sadly.

We live in a culturally diverse area, we have fireworks nearly all year, sometimes until 2am. Even during the height of the heatwaves. I have two cats, they seem to be used to it, my previous cat was terrified

It's the same where we are, religious festivals and weddings as well as Guy Faulkes. There is some open land on our estate and people tend to go there to let them off, sometimes into the early hours. It makes for a very disturbed night, and though we no longer have animals who are frightened it does wake up many neighbours' animals and children.

Chestnut you’ve hit the nail on the head! In my neighbourhood they start around September and actually carry on til March, it’s certain neighbours, not close enough to pinpoint the actual house, but close enough that the bangs are very loud.

I really wouldn’t mind it was just a few times a year, but every few days for months on end really does grind. People clearly have money to literally burn! grin

Chestnut Wed 02-Sept-26 10:43:41

I'm happy with any organised event with drones or fireworks. But selling fireworks to the public is never going to end well.

They're let off any time, any place, and this causes fear and anxiety in some people and most animals. If it were only a very few days that wouldn't be so bad but in some places they're going off for weeks on end and that's very upsetting for some. And they are let off in the street and public places.

One of those Police programmes on TV showed utter carnage on 5th Nov with gangs of kids letting off fireworks in public. It was so bad the local Police just had to stand back and let them get on with it, rather than approach and put themselves in danger of being burnt by fireworks being thrown at them. This (and much worse) is what can happen when fireworks are sold to the public. 😦
