This made me laugh out loud because I’ve had one of these conversations this morning.

I was trying to explain to MrP my new regime for saving water for the garden.
He looked at me as if I was speaking Urdu 😂

It takes so long to learn to speak "bloke". sigh. 🙄. Not DS, actually. Maybe it's a generational thing?

An alternative is of course

A diagram, carefully laid out.

petra there is always the alternative approach along the lines of,

"Darling, I really want a system for saving water for the garden. Can you think one up?"

Of course they are probably wise to that trick.

I asked AI to put the problem into man-speak.

"To get your partner on board, you need to skip the abstract environmental talk and frame the water-saving regime around efficiency, logic, concrete data, and a clear problem-and-solution structure.

Here is how to translate your garden plan into direct, impact-driven "man speak," along with a script you can use today.🛠️

The Translation Framework

Rebrand the project: Do not call it a "new regime." Call it an optimization plan, a system upgrade, or resource management.

Lead with the bottom line:

Focus immediately on the ultimate payoff, such as lower utility bills, better gear, or less wasted effort.

Use concrete metrics: Talk in terms of percentages, gallons, or dollars rather than vague concepts like "saving a lot."Define clear roles:

Outline exactly what he needs to do, what he should not touch, and how success will be measured. hands-on fixer, or does he just want the bottom line?) so we can tailor the pitch perfectly.

AI responses may include mistakes

🤣

😂😂😂

Daily!

"I asked AI to put the problem into man-speak."

Or petra could try speaking in Urdu:

ہمیں باغ میں پانی دینے کا انتظام درست کرنے کی ضرورت ہے۔
(hamin bag min pani dine ka antezam darist karne ki zarort hay)

I think 😂

I love a diagram.
My husband is not a diagram person.

Looking at potential houses I go first to the floor plans and am mildly annoyed if they don't have measurements.
My husband read the blurb first.

I don't think it's a man thing and don't like the way people assume that men and women necessarily think differently.

My son-in-law thinks broadly as I do when solving problems. So much so that we made identical errors when positioning new pendant lights in our homes.

Pity we hadn't discussed that one!
One son and 2 daughters don't think like me - much more like their father.

No problem with MrP making, building, fixing anything in the home or garden or the cars.
He’s laid a gravity fed system from the butts to the end of the garden so I don’t have to keep carrying watering cans.
We are both fully aware of how to save water as we lived off grid on a boat for 20 years which he built.
It was just me trying to explain where I wanted to keep the run off water.

😂😂😂😂😂 That is us!

Wyllow3 Tue 01-Sept-26 11:53:38

It was a great O/P petra.

I was just running with it lightheartedly. and of course its not gender based, in my first marriage I did the lot,

hands on stuff - window panes, putty, shelves up, heaving stuff around or helped on request, all the decorating and so on.

But I actually did find, in a further relationship there is such a thing as speaking bloke to some men .

NotSpaghetti Tue 01-Sept-26 12:04:12

Oh Wyllow it's not really you!
Apologies.

I just get fed up of the us/them mentality. Sorry.

Usedtobeblonde Tue 01-Sept-26 12:09:46

It’s the scratching of the head that did it for me
That is an international man thing, recognised in any language.
