Cheesy Christmas movies on the QVC app on our television. From now until Christmas I will be subjected to this torture every day. It's only the beginning of September. Eek!!

We did once find one which was not quite so cheesy, but unfortunately, I cannot remember what it was called so have never been able to find it again.

Perhaps one of you can help.

Storyline: young, single, American mum (stoney broke) pops her children into the car and drives off. (Can't remember whether she had a destination in mind, or was unable to continue paying her rent and had been evicted.) Loses her way in the dark in a state she does not know, sees a signpost stating Bethlehem. Realises this must be some small American town. Gets there, and is allowed to stay in the house of an old woman, who is in a retirement home. They have a marvellous small-town Christmas and of course, she falls for the old lady's helpful handsome young male relative.

Ring any bells?

I was in B&M this morning, It was more Christmassy than Halloweeny - and people were buying it.

I have to confess that I returned from holiday in Norfolk with about 10, mainly stocking, presents, but none was specifically Christmassy.

I received a Christmas catalogue in the post yesterday.
The first this year.

One of the nicest Christmas films I have seen is called The Christmas Train, adapted from a novel by David Baldacci(sp) who usually writes detective/ thriller type books.
Yes it is soppy in that there is love element and the setting is unbelievably gorgeous but it is feel good and has a splendid cast.
Try to catch it if is repeated during “the holiday season”.

Are you by any chance a two TV household MiniMoon or have a decent lap top to disappear upstairs and watch/listen to what you want or vice versa? It solves a lot. Sure, if you want to watch all stuff together then thats difficult.

Personally I would pop the schmalzy one upstairs but.....

Me too maybee70 always a bit quiet afterwards. X

MissAdventure Wed 02-Sept-26 22:23:26

I'd find that very difficult to live with.

Wyllow3 Wed 02-Sept-26 22:10:15

It is set at Christmas and it's a good yarn.

I know this is a bit off topic but I am hoping that there may be some Christmas film experts on here. Is 'Diehard' a Christmas film?

Yes.

I am rationing him to one a day. I will find something else to do while he has his daily fix of schmaltz.

You have my sympathies, MiniMoon. Plugs out! Alternatives to schmaltz on demand!

Depends on the sort of Christmas ahead in practice, but I hate all the commercialisation and wish for the days long ago of bonfires, family local so see people in bits not en masse, special food, help for those in need...
....no expectations about How It Should Be.

Once we get into December I have to watch The Muppet Christmas Carol and National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation.

MiniMoon Wed 02-Sept-26 21:00:21

Exactly pably, it isn't even Halloween.

pably15 Wed 02-Sept-26 20:46:31

I love Christmas, but only at Christmas...not September.

Usedtobeblonde Wed 02-Sept-26 20:37:06

Yes, Die Hard is a Christmas Film.
A debatable point for some.

I love the run up to Christmas which is always a bit of an anti climax and I always feel sad when it is over.

BlueBelle

Can’t bear to even think about Christmas I d happily hibernate for the whole of the C season
Never never never would I watch one

I’m with you, BlueBelle….
It starts so early now,all the shops have got Christmas goods in them
I used to love it when I was little and you got to hear about Christmas two weeks before (used to write our Christmas list and then set it on fire and put it up the chimney a magical time) just had time to get really really excited, now by the time it’s here I’m sick to death of it….Ahhh well at least I had those times and I’m thankful for that….

Marks and Spencer have all their Christmas chocolate in stock this morning. Something to munch on while you endure the Christmas films.
I love Christmas films but only from the middle of November.

Fallingstar Wed 02-Sept-26 16:25:47

One of my DDs loves these films, the plots are paper thin and always against a backdrop of sumptuous Christmas trees and snow. Not my cup of tea I’m afraid, give me a good murder mystery any day.

CarrotTop Wed 02-Sept-26 16:18:33

Too gloopy for me, and you could write the script yourself for most of them.
