Scarborough Visit

I have fond memories of childhood visits to lovely Scarborough. How good it is to have a positive thread about the state of the country !

What I recall is the huge, towering steam train at Paragon Station in Hull, waiting magically to take us to Scarborough. Oh the packing (Teddy must come) and then the Landlady, strict. No sand in the hall, perish the thought. But there was a slug in the salad on the first evening. Long idsucssionds about whether it should be mentioned.

Oh, “the can you see the sea yet” brings back more memories. Dad would promise my brother and I that the first one to spot the sea would get sixpence (old money😁). To be honest, though, dad made sure we both got sixpence 🤣.

I have very fond memories of Scarborough as a child. We would have a week in June (pit week), staying in a flat. Dad, bless him, couldn’t drive, but he had a friend who could who very kindly drove us there and back on one occasion (maybe more). I think other times we went by coach/train (I’m a bit vague on this as I was only very young). However, my memories are happy ones. I remember dad sitting on the beach with us and me and my brother having great fun “burying” him in the sand, whilst mum relaxed in a deck chair 😅.

There were 5 Cliff lifts [Funiculars) in Scarborough, only 2 working until recently as the one at the Spa has been closed as too expensive to repair/update/make safe. There is now only the Central Tramway operational, well it was a few weeks ago. I love Scarborough, we park by the Italian Gardens and wind our way down to what was the old outdoor swimming pool, walk along the front/beach, past the Spa, hop on the Funicular and mooch around the Town stopping off for a bacon butty at our favourite cafe, back down along the front and spend a few 2p’s in the slots lol, then slowly, slowly walk back up and along the Esplanade, resting along the way as its all uphill back to the car. Glad you had such a lovely time as well.

Well..now this is home turf, tho I dont know the park. Born in Hull, we always holidayed on the East Coast, Filey, Flamborough, Scarborough, Ravenscar, Robin Hoods Bay, Whitby, Runswick bay...cliff walks, the secret cafe at Boggle Hole Youth Hostel....and I know the coastline and the North York Moors well.

In a week or so am going for a few days just north of Scarborough to get to the seaside. (it had better have at least some sun.....)

I do hope it can be restored.

It was closed at the end of August Utbb due to safety concerns. Hopefully it can be repaired as like you say it is very hilly.

Are there any decent hotels in Scarborough,I should love to hear of one.
Any good recommendations?

One of my favourite places NannyPT, scene of childhood holidays and I’m told was where I took my first steps. I met a cousin there in April this year and we had a lovely time remembering times and loved ones long gone. It makes me feel emotional just to think of it.

I went in my teens and then about 10 years ago
I did enjoy it especially
Peasholme Park which is mentioned upthread.
I couldn’t do it now sadly as it is hilly, I remember two levels but there was a funicular rail from one level to the other, does that still operate?

Yes, I think Peasholm Park is a special place, it has a lovely atmosphere.

So glad you enjoyed your visit which sounds delightful. I have never been to Scarborough.

I have relatives who live in the area so I've been a few times, I love that part of the country.
