I wonder if in 20,000 years time. or even sooner humans will no longer exist. They say this could happen so what are your views?

Well luckily I won’t be here! Sorry to be flippant.

I think it's possible that humans could end up like orcas in captivity - no longer living our lifespan, beset by health problems due to our eating habits, buried under the rubble of our throw away attitudes, and unable to turn back the tide, or put on the brakes...

I had to smile as one senior AI company director stated recently; AI could evolve sufficiently in 10 years time to kill off the entire human race.

I was utterly astonished for two reasons;

Why on earth would a senior director (or he could have even been CEO), make a statement such as this, yet carry on working in said organisation?

I don’t actually agree in any sense with his timescales.

AI could kill all humans in next decade, warn experts: but how seriously should we take them? | AI (artificial intelligence) | The Guardian share.google/MDsNsEHcTWpFKEzNl

It's one thing for us - older generation - to read this, but I wonder how such information will affect the younger generation who have their lives yet to live?

I remember in my youth the existential dread of a nuclear holocaust when it became an 'everyday' anxiety for ordinary citizens.

I guess this will further polarise society because there will be those who dismiss the concerns as an over-reaction and try to discredit individuals who raise such concerns.

I've been talking to my eldest grandson about AI, he's 18 years old, intelligent, and studying Journalism and Politics at an overseas university (his intention is to 'go into' Politics) his fears are more immediate - related to the effect on jobs, Art, Literature and Music - he painted a grim picture. But he has the natural enthusiasm - and idealism - of youth and believes 'we' can - and must - move against 'unregulated' AI. I'm not so optimistic.

The Fritz Lang black and white film 'Metropolis' (1931 I think) is the embodiment of today's AI culture.

I think that future generations will not be able to tell the difference between what's real and what isn't.

Listening to this yesterday it brings home how serious it will/ can be.
The first part concentrates on who owns the tech we use.
Then we hear from experts who have been working in this field for years explaining how AI can take over.

Dickens You only have to look at FB reels and see/ listen to what your eyes and ears tell you is a very good song/ singer: but it’s not.
It makes you wonder tgat not too far into the future will people be going to the O2 to watch these singers on a huge screen🤷‍♀️
I think they will.

I agree. Sadly I think the future looks terrifying. I am more scared about AI than I ever have been about nuclear war or global warming.
I don’t think that the human race will continue for a lot longer. Everything that has, or is, going wrong is down to humans. We really don’t deserve this beautiful planet.

Whilst global warming may cause devastation to the human race it is unlikely to cause its extinction.

Ds, with very many years experience in IT and now a banking auditor, did say to me that AI has a long way to go to become the all-powerful manipulative being that people fear

There are parts of AI that I am looking forward to, self-driving car is one and there is already a lot of useful product-linked information available. However AI can be used for evil as long as there are people who seek riches and division

Personally, like my family, I live in my bubble and the only social media I subscribe to is GN. My phone stays in my living room whilst I am elsewhere, it only comes with me when driving.

So yes, humanity could die out and so be it but there is no point in worrying. Just live in the moment

But Mr Trump has said that AI has no need of "guardrails. Just a strong and smart president"

I get the feeling that Elon Musk may have told him to say that.
