There's a huge advert for vapes on a local busstop outside the high school, with a banner across the bottom This product contains nicotine.

Seeing as it is illegal to advertise cigarettes and tobacco, how the h*ll is this permitted? ๐Ÿ˜ก

I'm writing to my local Councillor and the advertising authority.

A ban is coming into effect on 1 June 2027.

The Tobacco and Vapes Act receivedRoyalAssenton29 April 2026.

My understanding is that billboard and outdoor advertising spaces are frequently bound by long-term corporate contracts signed months or years in advance. Implementing an immediate ban would trigger legal and financial disputes, resulting in breach-of-contract lawsuits between advertising agencies, landowners, and vape brands. The 2027 buffer allows existing contracts to expire naturally.

It is the unintended consequences of introducing solutions to a problem that was already declining in numbers. Smoking was declining, and would have continued to decline I suspect we will look back on the introduction of vaping as an error.
