I hope your OH gets tested soon...if it is some type of dementia he can apply for A A and probably a council tax rebate..

Thank you all for the kind words. Unfortunately we have no choice of surgeries. Even though there are several others nearby, they are over the County boundary. As it is, we have to travel about 6 miles to this one. Very expensive when reliant on taxis.

I live very close to a GP surgery, so naturally I signed up with them when I first moved. After about a year it had become increasingly obvious that it was not being run properly.

I transferred to a very good surgery further away and apart from having to travel further to get there, I have no regrets.

I found that, as long as you are within the catchment area, you can change GP surgeries quite easily provided your surgery of choice has not closed their list.

You can look up online to see how a surgery is rated before you make a choice.

If you feel that your surgery is not being run competently and this was not just a one-off mistake I would advise you to think about making a change.

That is really bad,,, my OH was referred for a brain scan when we were worried about his memory,,,we didn't have to wait long, it turned out he had Alzheimers, the consultant started him on Donepezil, which slows it down, he had to have an ECG first. If your OH had been seen sooner he might have had treatment , maybe not , we know it can't be cured, but even slowing it down is something, what has happened to you both is sheer incompetence. certainly complain.

That's truly awful and Cossy is right - you need to make a formal complaint and this will hopefully avoid any possible future staff incompetence. I won't go into details as don't want to hijack your post but my complaint to the GP surgery was upheld and resulted in them changing a failing procedure . I hope you're not waiting too long for the appointment.

I think that’s simply incompetence and warrants a complaint.

Without “complaints” they’ll simply carry on thinking all is fine.

I do your DH gets the help and support he needs, and that you do too.

That is truly awful, but please try and laugh about it, not cry. We were in a similar position 3 years ago, but were seen after 2 to 3 months. Hope your OH gets seen soon and gets any appropriate treatment.

I know that the NHS often does a wonderful job and we are not supposed to criticise it but sometimes I despair at the incompetence. I recently spent 5 hours with my OH in Emergency Treatment and what I observed really frustrated me but that's for another thread!

I hope your OH gets his appointment soon, chicken

If it wasn’t true it would be laughable. Your Surgery “could do better” as school reports sometimes say.
Hope your DH gets a swift appt. now.

Oh Chicken sounds like your gp needs the memory clinic!
It’s so hard to see loved ones getting so forgetful, and then waiting patiently for help
I hope the appointment comes through soon

My OH is getting confused and his memory is almost non existent so his doctor sent a referral for him to be assessed at a memory clinic. This was in June 2025. I know there is a very long wait for this, but this seemed excessive so I rang the surgery to find out how to check where he was on the waiting list. ( All phone calls ( You are number 27 in the queue.)).No one was able to find a phone number for the Memory Clinics so I was given the number for the next county, and told to ask them if they knew!

As you can imagine, I received a very shirty response and was told that my surgery must know the details, so another call to the surgery. This time they found a number to call, which I did. “ This number is not in service”.

After searching Google, I found details of various NHS Memory clinics in the area but none of them had received a referral for my OH, so I rang the surgery again. “The surgery is closed for staff training.”

Today, I rang and asked to speak to the manager. “Sorry, she’s on holiday.” However, the receptionist volunteered to do a search and found that the referral had been sent a month after the appointment with the doctor——-to the wrong email address, so our wait has been in vain. This helpful receptionist has arranged for it to be resent with a covering letter explaining the circumstances and asking for it to be prioritised, and has sent a message to the manager.

As I said in the title, I don’t know whether to laugh or cry.
