Mother had always warned me to be vigilant regarding hockey balls, but the sun was streaming in through that beautiful window. I was blinded by the light of St Cuthbert.
The bannisters had been polished. I went down faster than usual, collided with a pile of hockey sticks, and smelly culottes, and boots that had been left at the bottom of the stairs. As I was coming round, a rogue hockey ball hit by the school champion shot through a stained glass window of St Cuthbert and finished me off.
