Cyrosponge or transnasal endoscopy.

I’ve had a transnasal but only went as far as throat checking the goitre in throat I could easily cope with that but realised there is a new thing called a Cyrosponge have watched it on you tube it seems so much better than the usual house pipe down the throat 🤣🤣

Ask for extra sedation!

I have had 2 normal endoscopy procedures. I was beyond terrified for the first one and friends advised me against the throat spray but to ask for sedation. Both experiences have been the same and I don't remember anything from the sedative going into the cannula until being gently roused and asked if I would like tea and biscuits. If I had to have another it would not concern me at all. If your hospital doesn't offer this new procedure please don't be worried about the normal one. With sedation, it's fine.

I had endoscopy just over 3 years ago, it resulted with a tumor at the time , I was referred to a consultant for surgery , which I had but result wise I was clear, but have been having to give blood tests and CT scans and i am now in my final few months with a blood test and one CT scan for Bowel Cancer .

I have to say I had a capsule/sponge procedure a few weeks ago. When the nurse pulled it out it was excruciatingly painful! She did say that she hadn’t had anyone before who’d had such an extreme reaction. I told her I’d never have another one and would opt for traditional camera (monitored for Barrett’s Oesophagus anytime!

I volunteered to have the capsule/sponge test and found it painless and easy. The only thing I felt was a tickle at the back of my throat when the nurse centred the string to pull the capsule back out. I’ve never had a gastroscopy and don’t fancy one!

I had a nasal endoscopy a few months ago. A spray anaesthetic to numb my throat a little, but no sedation. It was fine, and I was able to answer questions as the procedure continued.

Hello HeavenLeigh … I was diagnosed with Barrett’s Oesophagus about 10 years ago and have been on a 3 yearly recall for routine endoscopies to check for any changes. First time was the usual one via the mouth. The second time I’d read about the sponge and asked whether it could be used …not in my area apparently, however they did offer a transnasal one. I jumped at that and my last two 3 yearly checks have been via my left nostril. It is SO much easier. No lying down, the procedure takes place with you sitting in a chair like a dental chair, upright. Local anaesthetic sprayed into nose and throat is the same as for the gastroscopy and yes it does feel as though you can’t swallow for a brief moments or so, however that is just the brain playing tricks as you can in fact swallow as normal. The slim tube with the camera is slowly introduced into the nostril and the technician can see where to go as the camera is on. As she gets to the back of the throat she says ‘swallow’ and you feel that there is something going down there but no gagging or streaming eyes! You can chat with the endoscopist whilst the procedure is going on and it all feels much less invasive. Altogether a much more tolerable alternative to a gastroscopy, in my opinion. This last time I was told that the Barrett’s has resolved …so no more 3 yearly follow ups for me unless I have worrying symptoms in the future. I hope that this helps and that you do feel able to agree to the transnasal route. It’s a different ball game, honestly!

First time I had an endoscopy without sedation....eeeeek literally. The last time a few months ago with sedation and I can't even remember the event tbh. Choose sedation.

I wouldn't be able to have anything like that without sedation. I have a really strong gag reflex; even cleaning my teeth sets me off!

I am the same, but having had sedation for colonoscopy and spending about 2 hours coming around and being sick, I decided to try without.

They give you a deadening throat spray. It was put through my mouth not nose.

Sooo, embarrased by the huge burps. My feedback said intolerant to the air pressure, but within 2 minutes of completion, I was up and away.

I had an endoscopy about thirty years ago with no sedation other than a throat spray and it resulted in three nurses holding me down. It was, quite frankly horrific and I doubt very much that it would happen like that now. I was so traumatised I don't know if I could ever get my head around submitting to it again.
I have had a hiatus hernia diagnosed via a barium swallow so
when requested, I volunteered to try the cyrosponge when it was new. It was more painful than I expected when it was being withdrawn and I had a very sore throat for three days afterwards.
I recently had a transnasal camera to investigate a possible problem with my tonsils (which may explain the sore throat) and it was calm and easy with no trauma at all, possibly because I didn't know it was going to be done until it happened.
I would always opt for that if I were given a choice.

I've had a couple of endoscopy. No problems at all. I sometimes think that thinking about these things are far worse than the actual event

Grandmaz I asked my hep yesterday and he’s agreed for me to have transnasal one which is a relief I presume you are or were on omperazole or similar are you still taking it? Did you get your results straight away as in what they actually found hiatal hernia etc. I presume biopsy’s were taken and sent off to lab . I did ask Approx what the waiting timescale was and he said Approx 6 weeks, I’m finding it hard to manage the reflux. But think I should buy maybe Gaviscon
