years ago making Christmas cakes mum had a little pot containing nutmegs. the little hard nutmeg was ready to grate carefully to use in cakes and rice pudding. i was just wondering if anyone still uses nutmeg now? can you still get those little nutmegs to grate? i know its nice in rice pudding so i wondered what it would be like for porridge etc

I used to use the nutmeg and grate but I don't use it often and use powdered now.

Absolutely. I always have some in the cupboard though there’s always a lot left when it’s time to sling them out and buy fresh. I last bought some whole nutmegs from Tesco.

Yes you can still buy whole nutmegs. I have a little nutmeg grater. I found that ready grated nutmeg dries up rather quickly and loses its flavour. I grate it onto bread and butter pudding, carrots and parsnips.

I have never tried it on porridge.

I have a pot with 2 nutmegs in. Have had them for ages. Do they go off? They still smell nutmeggy and pleasant when I grate them with a little grater. Next time I have rice pudding I will grate some on the top.

Poppysmum, Yes to all your questions! In south east Asia they grate the mace and roll it in sugar, it’s delicious.

I have a nutmeg mill that I use all the time. I always add it to savoury dishes as well ass sweet ones. Used it yesterday making a lasagne.

I also have whole nutmegs with a dinky little grater. I keep the nutmegs in a pretty fabric bag.
I use it in the Christmas cake and on rice pudding.

An essential ingredient of my mulled wine and Glühwein.

I use whole nutmegs. I have a little nutmeg grater with a nut storage space at one end. Freshly grated nutmeg has an aroma and flavour far beyong that ground stuff.

Secret spell for mushroom magic: if you're frying mushrooms for a classic British breakfast, or just mushrooms on toast, grate a little nutmeg in the pan.

Also I keep a few inches of ginger root wrapped in the freezer, take it out and quickly grate a little spoonful while it's still rock hard, bung it back in the freezer. Great for tea, cakes, curries etc.
