I was just listening to a chap on the radio who was asked by his employer to explore how AI could benefit the business.

In doing so, he realised AI could easily replace him and his entire department.

Imagine being asked to help develop the technology that could cost you and your colleagues your livelihoods. Nine months later in a department of five two had been made redundant and six others from other departments from a workforce of twenty odd.

It's scary.

One of my sons in law is a graphic designer (who has won awards) and he was let go by his company along with 4 others last year. As he said why pay a graphic designer for ‘art work’ when AI is cheaper to produce ‘good enough’ advertising of a product and doesn’t need a pension etc.

It’s all developing at a rate of knots I think and the users are frantically playing catch up plus it’s all going to grow exponentially.

What are your thoughts on it all?

I think it is very worrying for our young people, lots of desk based jobs are disappearing along with manufacturing to AI and robotics.

Let’s hope they turn to hands on careers like plumbers, electricians, hairdressing, beauty, construction, nursing, care work etc.

I think it’s all very sad and AI has been “allowed” to develop and move on far too quickly.

On a personal note I wish your SiL well in regaining employment.

I’m not against AI per se, but feel it could result in too many job losses too quickly and actually result in “lazy” processes.

I also think the UK were a bit slow in ensuring they had a handle on those with the experience and ability to develop AI and I partially hold the government to account and responsible for this situation.
