How do you feel about getting older? Whether it's a pet peeve or, equally, something you like, let us know (in no more than two sentences) and you could appear in a brand new novel.

Pan Macmillan publishers want to get a snapshot of real women’s feelings about ageing. A selection of these will be included in the new book The Time of our Lives by Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller Maeve Haran.

You might remember Maeve as the author of 90’s smash hit Having It All, a novel that sparked huge debate about whether women could work and have a family, and much more besides. As well as being a brilliant read, her new book is about four friends in their early sixties, and the new issues they face, twenty years older than the protagonists of Having it All.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a draw to win one of 20 exclusive early reading copies of The Time of Their Lives, and everyone whose comments are used will be entered into a draw to win a luxury forest cabin break for four people – details HERE.

We also have an exclusive extract from the book which you can read here.

I don't like the thought of getting older. In my mind I am still 21 but my body tells me differently. I can't do what I used to be able to do and that frustrates me.

would love this, need a break the start of the year has been traumatic and would love something to look forward to.

Being older is only a number, its how you feel on the inside.{smile]

katscreamy Fri 21-Feb-14 21:57:40

i hate getting older because my body is giving up on me. mentally i'm ok, but everything hurts!

Kflori Fri 21-Feb-14 21:53:42

I reuse to think I am getting older, everybody else is just looking much younger, that's all!

brummie Fri 21-Feb-14 21:38:33

I'm happy with the fact that I am more confident than in my youth but I hate to see the ever-increasing wrinkles on my face.

Milly Fri 21-Feb-14 21:24:09

My Dad at 82 said he still felt young inside, now I am 79 I too still feel young inside, and then look in the mirror. Ugh.

Caramac Fri 21-Feb-14 21:09:00

I hate being this age and looking this old when I still haven't done anything! I especially haven't done anything for me yet : (

louiseacat Fri 21-Feb-14 21:07:13

I'm finding it really scary how time is just flying by now - the fact that I'm half way through my life is terrifying but.....CONFIDENCE is now growing at an amazing rate. I suppose its some compensation!

I've always found this mantra, "It's better than the alternative", an uplifting yet sobering thought on getting older.

SusieWilkinson Fri 21-Feb-14 20:50:21

I've turned into a grumpy old woman! Totally intolerant of all the little annoying things that for years I just put up with!

Maxine Fri 21-Feb-14 20:28:06

I like the distance being older brings - things aren't quite so intense, there's more perspective from knowing the past. I don't so much like being peripheral, and passing a time when I had the energy ( and folly) to believe I could make things happen.

pirate64 Fri 21-Feb-14 20:13:47

No problem with getting older just your body cant keep pace with what you want to do anymore.

jeanblew Fri 21-Feb-14 20:09:16

The secret is that I am only 21 in my head not 64 like my body.

SallySwann Fri 21-Feb-14 20:03:48

You're only as old as the woman you feel, as my wife keeps reminding me, so no problem!

cryssy Fri 21-Feb-14 19:57:55

The bad thing is knowing you are starting to look old and wrinkly, the even worse thing is that your eyesight is so weak you don't even notice when you look in the mirror !

moleswife Fri 21-Feb-14 19:40:22

I've got braver as I've got older and am not bothered so much about expressing my views - if others don't agree that's OK but they (and I) have to respect other's views. I am so concerned about younger people who feel they must 'keep their mouths shut' for fear of losing their jobs, being bullied, being ridiculed, etc because the current atmosphere engenders one that my mother would have recognised back in the 30s.

Debr4h Fri 21-Feb-14 19:34:34

As I get older I seem to be turning into my mother, that could be seen as either a positive (wise, kind, generous, patient) or a negative (overweight, stiff-jointed, forgetful) but at least I know what's ahead.

oznan Fri 21-Feb-14 19:31:54

I prefer being older and, unlike some, find I have not become "invisible" but people, even the youngsters, have more time for me.Just wish the arthritis didn't come with it!

lindyloo50 Fri 21-Feb-14 19:25:57

I don't mind the getting old bit too much, but why didn't anyone tell me it's painful!! And what happened to my memory? No one told me I'd have the memory of a peanut at the age of 60!!

henbane Fri 21-Feb-14 19:25:22

Being retired is good: don't have to get up early in the morning, and don't have to wear a suit and heels. Being old is bad: having got up can't get down stairs, and couldn't walk in heels if I wanted to!

grandma60 Fri 21-Feb-14 19:19:25

I never thought I would be still working at the age of 61. Got 18 months to go and I hate feeling so tired. Looking forward to having more time and energy to enjoy grandchildren more.

thehumblerah Fri 21-Feb-14 19:16:55

The great thing about getting older is knowing what you want. The downside is everything starts to wear out.

Venus Fri 21-Feb-14 19:02:09

I don't like getting older, as there are far too many people younger then me!

LesleyE1231 Fri 21-Feb-14 18:56:33

Don't worry about the past.its gone. Don't worry about the future . It's yet to come. Enjoy the present !
