How do you feel about getting older? Whether it's a pet peeve or, equally, something you like, let us know (in no more than two sentences) and you could appear in a brand new novel.

Pan Macmillan publishers want to get a snapshot of real women’s feelings about ageing. A selection of these will be included in the new book The Time of our Lives by Sunday Times Top Ten Bestseller Maeve Haran.

You might remember Maeve as the author of 90’s smash hit Having It All, a novel that sparked huge debate about whether women could work and have a family, and much more besides. As well as being a brilliant read, her new book is about four friends in their early sixties, and the new issues they face, twenty years older than the protagonists of Having it All.

Everyone who posts a comment will be entered into a draw to win one of 20 exclusive early reading copies of The Time of Their Lives, and everyone whose comments are used will be entered into a draw to win a luxury forest cabin break for four people – details HERE.

We also have an exclusive extract from the book which you can read here.

I don't feel my age or act it.

bobble5 Sat 22-Feb-14 21:15:41

Being older is great, I may be wrinkling round the edges. I'm more selective choosing my friends and I care less of what others think of me.

I love growing older as the alternative is way less appealing!

ginamat Sat 22-Feb-14 20:09:56

It's not very nice getting old with all the aches and pains and saggy bits but the alternative is worse!

GrannyGear Sat 22-Feb-14 19:54:50

Being old is great because I have a bus pass and a bicycle. What more could I want?

When menapause symptoms hit me on Christmas Day the year before last,
(my poor kids), I realised that I finally had 'got older' but after getting over the shock, in a way, I find I don't mind . I have my children and a dog that keep me fit .I have hair dye, and I can still walk in high heels on occasion. I wear what I want to wear, not necessarily 'mutton dressed as lamb' but more 'wrinkly with attitude'. There are things I haven't done . I am still planning to learn to drive and I want to climb to Machu Picchu and I don't rule out ice skating just yet either. Inside I am 16 and always will be. its just that my body is now operating in slow motion. love life and live it to the full, cos it doesnt do encores.

I don't mind being in my sixties, but I do envy the young their ability to sleep deeply and peacefully, all night long, even on uncomfortable couches, on planes or on floors. And it's utterly wasted on them - what do they do? Take drugs to help them stay awake!

I am still a young oldie, and I wonder, despite my aches and pains and deepening wrinkles, if I will ever really think of myself as old as long as I am fortunate enough to still have my own parents here. It's all relative, and they definitely help me to keep my own age in perspective!

magicnanny Sat 22-Feb-14 16:57:03

I am an entry level oldie and life is great, freedom from work and worry, full of fun and family. However properly aged and infirm is not for the faint hearted and I fear I am too much of a wimp for it.

Sheer fright about any future illnesses, hospitals, hospices etc. Delight at hopefully overcoming former sentence and 'eliminating the negative , accelerating the positive' as the song goes!

Love getting older - become more wiser and more experienced and just appreciate everyday in it's own special way smile

bunyip2104 Sat 22-Feb-14 16:28:06

I'm certainly getting more aches and pains now, but one things for sure I wouldn't be a teenager again for all the tea in china!

Age is just a number not a state of mind

nivvydoh Sat 22-Feb-14 16:11:08

Getting older makes it easier to forget how great it was to be young! That's natures way of making the aging process more bearable.

soozydal Sat 22-Feb-14 15:01:38

Last night on Graham Norton Miriam Margolyes claimed to be very old at 72, this morning on Radio 4 Yottam Ottolenghi said he was ancient at 45. I caught the bus with my 100 year old neighbour who is always telling me I'm far too young to have a bus pass, ageing is THE most subjective process!

Sararose Sat 22-Feb-14 14:45:42

I am much happier now that I am older. I can do what I like, eat and drink what I like, go where I like with whomever I like and actually afford to do it!

isleofwhim Sat 22-Feb-14 12:57:00

I don't feel any different inside. I just wish the outer packaging felt the same way!

dougell Sat 22-Feb-14 12:41:00

Did I really say that!!!

The joy of getting old is being able to pretend that you can't remember what you said or did!

tabbaz Sat 22-Feb-14 12:40:47

When you see your reflection and for the first time you see an old person looking back at you it can be somewhat of a shock. That moment is when you make a decision, to grow old gracefully or fight; both have their advantages smile

homecare Sat 22-Feb-14 12:01:06

I don't want to get old cause my spirit is still so young

Candice Sat 22-Feb-14 11:43:07

Live your life right now - today. You don't know what's going to happen tomorrow - and this is for every day, not just us oldies.

libra10 Sat 22-Feb-14 11:33:57

Fabulous fun, free time, do what we want, enjoying life.
Downside - wondering what's to come!
