My parents didn't have money to buy us comics, but we read The Broons and Oor Wullie in The Sunday Post newspaper every week, and at Christmas always got a Broons or Oor Wullie Annual which we would read before breakfast. 'Maggie Broon' seemed a very glamourous character to me, and having 'weans' about the house would have meant always someone to play with. I probably would have liked to have been part of that big family as a child!
You sometimes got a bundle of old comics that someone else was finished with and that was great, so I did see the occasional Bunty, Beano and Dandy.

Beano for me

NfkDumpling Thu 14-May-15 19:55:34

I was bought Jack and Jill followed by School Friend. My parents thought School Friend was 'suitable'! in my teens my pocket money didn't often stretch to magazines and comics, but I did buy Girl sometimes.

Bunty & Judy annuals with enticing things to do inside

mgtanne71 Tue 12-May-15 15:29:14

I liked the Rupert Bear Annual and especially all the competitions in the comics

willtunn Tue 12-May-15 14:54:43

I loved the Beano, Billy Whizz and The Bash Street Kids being my faves but then went on to 2000AD. Rogue Trooper had a strange but funny sense of humour that appealed to me

pamelaJEAN Tue 12-May-15 11:56:26

As a child I loved the Beezer , out every Tuesday, I really looked forward to reading it, and occasionally it would have a free gift inside, a balloon or a whizzer. at Christmas if funds would stretch my mum would buy me the Beezer annual... I loved the smell of a new book.

jewils43 Tue 12-May-15 11:55:02

Loved reading Jackie and the problem pages.

lemonbuns Tue 12-May-15 11:51:17

I loved so many- some that come to mind are the Numb Skulls from Beezer comic, Milly O Naire and Penny Less, Whizzer and Chips was brilliant too!

Worthy but slightly dull , The Girl was the allowed comic in our house but I secretly read borrowed copies of the Bundy and Judy under the bedclother by torchlight. I longer to go to boarding school so the Four Marys were my favourite characters.

clarabella3 Mon 11-May-15 01:08:22

I loved the beano and the dandy especially desperate dan smile

peanutmum Sat 09-May-15 23:07:25

I wasn't given a comic each week, but maybe if special gifts I got one.
I was passed on those 'Look and Learn' comics.
They were wonderful to me and far better than boring encyclopaedias, which were just writing and no glorious pictures.
I must admit I still like picture books the best !!!!!!!!!!!

scrapgran Sat 09-May-15 19:39:09

Used to read Girl and School Friend when I was younger - and joined their fan clubs of course!

Can't really rmemebre the characters very well - don't remember regular ones but I loved the stories

Yvette32 Fri 08-May-15 21:25:48

I loved Beano - and Dennis the menace has to be my favourite character x

Nanacat13 Fri 08-May-15 09:44:23

When very young I loved Noddy, then graduated to Rupert Bear - his adventures were scarily exotic - and eventually to Jackie, where I even managed to have a couple of letters and strip cartoons published!

VictorMthe2nd Thu 07-May-15 20:55:29

Without any doubt "The Eagle" and "Dan Dare" created by Frank Hampson, first published when I became 5, brilliantly printed in full colour on quality gloss paper, and it had a wonderful clean fragrance as well that made me save them to the horror of my Grandmother who did not appreciate clutter - compelling reading to boot!

I loved Bunty and Judy and as I reached my teens had Jackie, loved my comic books

gerry86 Wed 06-May-15 16:11:25

My favourite was Bunty, I loved the stories and you often got a free gift.

Hi , I was not allowed comics, but would love reading some in friends homes, dandy and beano, I thought were stupidly funny !!
There were others I have forgotten , I think looking back at my life, that this ban held me back regards reading ! for I used to like Rupert the bear , and still do somewhat!
The pictures helped one learn to read the words, more so than comics!
I became a very causal reader, until after my children were born!
Sharing stories with them I found was so delightful, that I took to reading biography s and travel books!
My own children had comics , tried to buy story type ones, with info; of things to see and do!
Just had happy news great grandson George James arrived on St Georges day! My quota now stands at nine grand children and two GT, grandsons , with another baby due in sept: love them all .

Stef1972 Sun 03-May-15 19:49:53

It has to be Victor Book for Boys and Warlord for me, characters like Charley's War were epic for children, especially boys!

tigga Sun 03-May-15 11:50:14

i was also a beano fan but my mother made me wear a brown fluffy hat and my brothers nicknamed me gnasher and it stuck for many years
