We only ever got a comic for the train journey when we went on our annual holiday, so with only one a year the one we chose was precious. My sister was only a year older than me so we chose together so we could swap, my brother was 4 years younger so he tended to choose Beano or Dandy, still worth a read though.

My sister and I chose with the free gifts in mind, one year I chose 'Jackie' because there was a free 'Elvis' ring included, when the ring fell apart I kept it and eventually it was attached to the collar of my biker jacket when my boyfriend got his first motorbike. Now at the age of 67 I still have that leather jacket, covered in fringes and badges and my Elvis ring is still attached to it.

Bunty and Judy and then as I got older I had Jackie. Denis the Menace in Beano was a guilty secret!!

I remember reading Penny but can't recall any of the characters in it. I also loved Tammy, and as I was mad about gymnastics my favourite heroine was
Bella. A fellow gymnast who always had to battle against the odds.
I progressed onto Look-In (only 10p!) when I started getting interested in pop music, and now I have thought about the accompanying TV advert I can't get the jingle out of my head. hmm

I used to adore Bunty which my Grandfather used to buy for me every week. Remember storing them in a pile in my bedroom and reading them over and over again. Such innocent times!

I loved COR!! it was so funny and entertaining.I used to wait for it to come through the letter box and read it from cover to cover- I even got the album every Christmas too for many years- my favourite characters were Ivor Lott and Tony Broke! I was never interested in girls magazines as I was never a girlie girl. dolls and make up never interested me. I wanted to be up to mischief, climbing trees, making dens and swinging on ropes over rivers. I was a real daredevil, like many characters in COR!! I sill have the scars to prove it!

Used to love the day a comic was delivered to my nan's each week for me. Started off with Jack and Jill, then Bunty and then Jackie.

vee Tue 28-Apr-15 12:58:15

Beano and Dandy, then Jackie & Bunty. Think I preferred Beano and Dandy! smile Beano definitely the winner though - always wanted to go to Bash Street School!

Sararose Tue 28-Apr-15 12:46:52

I had Girl's Crystal every week and my best friend had Girl so of course we swapped! I don't remember any characters as it was so long ago! I do remember lots of stories about boarding schools and jolly japes! We re-enacted some of the adventures delving into the dressing up box to make it realistic!

I don't know what modern teenagers would make of these old comics now - They are probably reading 50 Shades of Grey!

sparky61 Tue 28-Apr-15 12:19:05

Mine was Judy, Mandy, Bunty and Diana. My mum reserved them at local newsagents and we'd collect on a Saturday morning I felt so grown up sitting on the sofa reading them. This thread has brought back some very happy memories :-)

Clairemike Tue 28-Apr-15 12:15:04

susiegee Tue 28-Apr-15 12:07:05

I remember reading Bunty and Jackie but my greatest memories are of my brother laughing loudly as he read Beano.

angep1969 Tue 28-Apr-15 11:33:32

I loved The Beano - then graduated to Blue Jeans as a teenager :-)

milliemoon1 Tue 28-Apr-15 11:29:42

I loved Billy whizz from the Beano as I used to think it would be amazing to run around the world in a few seconds!

mpsandy Tue 28-Apr-15 11:19:31

It had to be Beano and Dandy. I used to love looking at the artwork and always had the annuals at Christmas.

granh1 Tue 28-Apr-15 10:58:45

My elderly aunt used to buy a copy of the Beano for me and my brothers, when she did her weekly shopping in town. I had four brothers, so there was a tussle to see who would read it first. We lived in the countryside and I loved nature - pity Eco Kids Planet wasn't around! My grandchildren would love Eco Kids, but there would be a tussle to see who would read it first!

GrannyCaz1 Tue 28-Apr-15 10:55:56

My next door neighbour use to buy me Twinkle and my brother Beano every weekend

inishowen Tue 28-Apr-15 10:47:10

I started off with Jack and Jill when I was about five, and at the same time loved my brother's Topper. Then graduated to Judy, Bunty, June and Schoolfriend, then Romeo and Jackie. I LOVED my comics.

I was a comic addict!!! The best were Marvel and DC Comics - Spider-man, Batman, The Avengers, X-Men, Superman. However British weekly publications The Beano, Whizzer & Chips, The Transformers, 2000AD and Action Force were favourites, too.

But one of the best non-mainstream titles was a horror anthology comic called 'SCREAM'. It was for older children, and I remember it had free 'Dracula Fangs' with Issue 1 and a free 'Tarantula' with Issue 2. And the stories were BRILLIANT - dead creepy, always ending with an exciting cliff-hanger, leaving us the readers chewing at the bit in anticipation of the next issue.

Time to howl at the moon !!!

Rosannie Mon 27-Apr-15 18:55:49

Between me, my brother and cousins who lived a few doors away we got Beano, Dandy, Topper, Hotspur, Bunty and Judy. We 'swapped' with each other and they kept us going all week!
I was thrilled when more cousins arrived from Scotland and they got the Sunday post with 'Oor Wullie' and 'The Broons'. I loved the Oor Willie annual at Christmas.
Diana and Jackie were my favourites as a teenager.

catper Mon 27-Apr-15 13:02:22

The Beano and The Dandy, old Desperate Dan and his mad cow pies! Loved getting a comic and a little bag of pick and mix with my pocket money on a Thursday.

Larnipoo42 Sun 26-Apr-15 23:20:42

Look in and smash hits for me. I don't know whether we will see an era like it again. Top of the pops on TV (be great if this was back on TV with so much good music coming out of the UK at the mo) to fuel our the real love for pop music/culture.

juggler1000 Sun 26-Apr-15 19:30:59

I loved Bunty and Jacky - never missed one :-)
