My dh once bought me a deep fat fryer for valentines day.I dont eat fried food but he does so you can guess who it was really for

One Christmas DH went on several trips to town sourcing a present that he then threw out hints about hinting that it was something I would really enjoy/that would make life much more enjoyable etc, etc.
On the big day it sat in pride of place under the tree, beautifully wrapped. I am ashamed to say that on unwrapping a new washing up bowl( albeit a sort of sparkly silver) I was too taken aback to tell him what I really thought. He never twigged that I was anything other than delighted.
After 40 years of marriage I'm now very careful to throw out such strong hints re gifts that I would like that he would have to have the hide of a Rhinoceros to ignore them.
Men!!!

A roll of chicken wire fencing from my father. On our silver wedding anniversary my husband said he would give me the engagement ring he couldn't afford at the time. Instead I opted for a new motor mower.

A Christmas cactus! When presented with this prickly object I didn't at first associate it with Valentines Day. Hubs then explained that all the flower shops were closed by the end of the day & the only shop still open was the greengrocers at the end of the road! He considered himself fortunate to have grabbed such a bargain, as it had been half price. The greengrocer said it wasn't looking its best due to being in stock since Christmas and by 7.30 pm on Valentine's Day, nobody else was going to buy it! Nice!

I got a kitchen blowtorch minus gas which I'm not allowed!

I had to dissuade DH from giving his sister a Le Creuset frying pan for her sixtieth. However, I may be the unromantic one as, when asked what I want for Christmas, birthdays etc., I have regularly asked for a wood-chipper, which I'd really like. No luck yet.

The first Christmas after I got together with the current husband he gave me a sauté pot and a set of cutlery. No idea why as I had plenty pots and cutlery!

Shrimp Sun 14-Feb-16 12:28:27

One Christmas DH gave me two plastic treads for the car so it wouldn't skid getting out of the garage in wet or icy weather. I was outraged!

Rats - "not to" not not go!! smile

grandMattie Sun 14-Feb-16 11:32:59

My now DH decided not go give me anything as what he chose was "always wrong" - yes! But I gave him probably the least romatic gift ever. I bought him a lorry-load of horse -shit- manure for his 60th! Beat that grin

As I was in hospital having just given birth to our first child my (now ex) husband gave me a small crate of satsumas. His explanation was that flowers would die, I wouldn't have time to look after a plant and as for chocolates I would want to lose the baby weight as soon as possible! Things never did improve present -wise. hugs

I was saying to my (newish) boyfriend that I needed a new ironing board cover. Guess what I got one from him for Christmas!!! x

mimicat1 Sun 14-Feb-16 11:00:45

I got lots of cake decorating gear once. Useful but not romantic.

karen203 Sun 14-Feb-16 10:37:26

My DH excels at presents - various Christmas presents have included a microwave (they were new at the time) and a new dustbin (but it did have good presents inside). The ultimate present came when he gave 4 year old son money to buy Mothers Day present. He had followed his fathers example and bought me a scrubbing brush and some pegs. Same son didn't improve with age have had a cafatiere one year and wooden egg cups another. Thank goodness he got married and his wife has more imagination

MammaN Sun 14-Feb-16 10:29:47

I got a toilet roll holder and something else related to it - so bad I've wiped it from my mind obviously. These were Christmas presents many years ago and DH's excuse was "we needed some"!

laurenold Sun 14-Feb-16 10:23:37

The least romantic gift I've ever received is an apron

cathyov Sun 14-Feb-16 10:06:57

Least romantic gift was NO gift - he hasn't made that mistake again!

My ex husband of 36 years used to have red roses delivered to my work. It was all about showing off in front of my work colleagues. "Look at me, see what a wonderful romantic husband I am". He wasn't in the least romantic with me away from everyone and I was mentally abused for those 36 years. Got the courage up to leave him and get a divorce in the end.
