My birthday tea towel from ex-MiL pales into insignificance against these wonderful things. Haven't laughed so much in ages. I do wonder why so many are car-related?

I was so looking forward to my 40th birthday - a new decade - children safely at secondary school, affordable mortgage, 'me' time, the date approached, I gave the usual wifely hints about eternity rings, a special piece of jewellery etc etc.

So ........ A PAIR OF WELLINGTON BOOTS!!!!! What was even worse was that he gave them to me the week before my birthday because that was the day my old ones gave up the ghost. On the day itself a hideous card, the only one in the village shop.

I would like to point out that for HIS 40th - I threw a party for all his oldest friends, served all his favourite food and made a huge effort.

Harrumph.

An egg separator - well he did say it was a "yolk" present. Maybe it was revenge as he could never think of anything he wanted and kept just saying "an elephant" so he received a Dumbo book, some zoo glue in the shape of an elephant and an elephant eraser. He was more thoughtful and careful after that.

Several years ago we were staying in our holiday home for Christmas and my present that year was extremely heavy - what on earth could it be?, I wondered....turned out to be Bathroom scales!!! We did need some in the apartment, but really! Had to laugh though.

When we first met my DH gave me a spent bullet, apparently he was was going to have it silver plated and put on a chain for me
but didn't have time. 33 years later I still think, why!!!

A bloody iron. We'd only been married 12 months too! That should have been a warning, but it took me another 10 years to come to my senses.

Toilet rolls and a clock, I dindt want either but I put the clock on the wall and it still there almost 30 years later, I still hate it, needless to say the toilet rolls went down the drain.

We have recently made a big move to an area I know no one and don't know at all and I am job hunting so my amazing fiance bought me a car for my birthday to help me get around a bit more easily, get to know the area and get to job interviews. Such a lovely idea but he got for £125 and needed loads of work doing to it which he promised me would be done straight away... 6 months later it is still off the road!

My tool-mad better half got me a few bits he thought I'd like: a claw hammer, a power screwdriver with attachments and a multi-tool. Needless to say he soon managed to add 'my tools' to his toolkit and I recently found a rusty screwdriver in my toolbox - guess he left it out in the rain or something and so gave it back. I should also add that I'm not exactly renowned for DIY skills - I'm pretty useless with most things on that front! Luckily most of the gifts he gets for me are things I like and use smile Fingers crossed.

A car repair tool kit - I mean, really??? He bumped the car, not me

Maybe I've been lucky, as men in my life seemed to like to express a touch of romance. With gifts such as flowers, chocolates, perfume etc. I appreciate the effort they made.

A plastic rose for valentines days so apparently he didnt need to buy anymore in the future!!! he is now gone lol (i still have the rose however)

sue01 Wed 10-Feb-16 15:50:51

A pair of illuminated tweezers. So I wouldn't miss the hairs on my chin !

henbane Wed 10-Feb-16 15:22:34

I didn't actually get this one myself but...

How about a scissor-jack? (for a non-driver)

I did once get a book of love poems, which would have been quite romantic if it hadn't had an imperfectly erased inscription to someone else!

I too once got an electric hard skin remover, I'd forgotten about that until I read the post mentioning it!

So my list now includes a toilet seat, digital air compressor and the foot thing.

There was also the year that he got me 2 electric fans for my birthday, but as I was going through the most awful hot flushes, it was actually a very thoughtful gift!

sallyc06 Wed 10-Feb-16 12:36:46

The most awful dress. It was white covered in trellis and roses growing up, every tiime we went out, he would say wear that lovely dress I bought you.....

Nonnie1 Wed 10-Feb-16 11:55:44

The least romantic gift I ever received was a bag of dishwasher tablets.

Speechless

starlily106 Wed 10-Feb-16 11:51:13

my boyfriend at the time turned up on feb 14th, and handed me a paper bag. in it was a bright orange girdle. it was hideous! i only weighed about 7 stone, but when i struggled into it my legs were jammed together, and it was so tight i couldn't get it off. it was far stronger than i was, and in the end i had to cut it off. needless to say, i cut him off soon after that!

SuzC Wed 10-Feb-16 11:46:10

A toilet brush & holder goes down as the all time worst 'present' my husband has ever given me...

vickimac Wed 10-Feb-16 11:16:20

the least romantic gift i received off my husband was a box of biscuits which he got in the xmas sales & saved for me for valentines - i was so mad i brought him a microwave for his birthday as payback & i really needed a new one ( crafty), that was 34 years ago- now i always get something very nice lol !

Chichachongawonga Wed 10-Feb-16 11:09:40

A mop head!! but he said it wasn't any old mop but a special one he had seen whilst shopping and thought it was just the thing I would like......I did not ask did I not deserve a full mop instead of just the head as I was afraid of the answer. Is he a new husband?? no I'm afraid not he has been around for 20 years and never got any better.....smile

wallers5 Wed 10-Feb-16 10:50:37

A pancake pan to be sure I could make Pancakes on Shrove Tuesday.

Zengran Wed 10-Feb-16 08:16:35

A washing up bowl! When he saw my expression when I opened it he said "well you did say you needed a new one the other day" !!!
