I actually don't really remember the heat (it could be because we were living in the far north of Scotland so it was hot but not tropical). I do however, remember the ladybirds - they were everywhere. You couldn't open a window without the house being invaded and we were finding them for months after the summer.

I remember my mum putting a paddling pool with a couple of inches of water in the front garden for my younger siblings and the garden being invaded by all the neighbourhood children.

Yes I can. I was 16 and remember finishing school for the summer holidays. It was so hot we were told to stay inside as the tarmac was melting and could scorch our feet if we stood on it

A wonderful weeks holiday in the Isle of Wight. The sun shone from first thing in the morning to last thing at night.

no can't remember much of the 70s

I remember endless long days playing in the garden! We had an old caravan at the bottom of the garden (no longer used) and we were allowed to take the mattresses out of there and laze around on them or do roly polys! Great fun! We camped out in our little tents! And as for the mud pie shop...I have a great photo of that! I don't think my little sister could stop sucking her thumb long enough to make many mud pies haha! :-)

I remember that summer we were living in Colchester at the time, my best friend was a red head , pale skin and freckles.She was adamant that she could sunbathe all day and wouldn't burn!!
She burnt so badly her back blistered and she ended up in hospital

I was six and I can my mum getting terribly burnt and suffering for weeks :/

Being ridiculously hot and uncomfortable!

The Summer of '76 was my first taste of freedom! As soon as the O-levels were out of the way,I started work as an apprentice hairdresser. We used to pile all 5 of us girls into an MGB GT at lunch time to dash to the beach and eat our lunch with our legs out. Happy carefree days

I remember being in work with the windows wide open and having the engineers coming into the room telling us we must close the windows for the air-conditioning to work.
At lunch time going out onto the grassed area to have our food.
Getting home was a nightmare the trains were always full so standing room only, it was so very hot even with the windows wide open.

I don't remember but thats nothing new and typicall of any period from when I was younger x

I remember it well. At the time we had a small sweet and toy shop and couldn't keep up with Ice Cream and Lollies, we went to such lengths to stock the freezers but they emptied very quickly. We spent our holiday in Wales that year and all the children wanted to do was go swimming to cool off. I don't think anyone got a nights sleep and when it finally rained I can remember lots of neighbours just stood in the street soaking it up

Do I remember?....yes I certainly do, in February that year I gave birth to my dear Son, he was a fair weight at 7lb 11oz and by the summer was able to sit up in his pram, as the heat arrived I left him to his morning nap in the pram in the back garden with canopy to keep sun off, I glanced from my window and saw his little legs kicking about so went out to see him, OMG what a surprise he was covered from head to toe in a red rash, I imeadiately thought it was a heat rash, so smothered him in calamine lotion, which made no difference. After a very busy night of crying and cooling, I decided I should call the doctor, it turned out to be German Measles, poor little lad he was quite poorly for a good week, so yes I do remember that heatwave, but not for the obvious reasons of sunbathing and paddling in the sea!!!

I wasn't born unfortunately.. my mother was only 8!

i remember the heatwave of 76 the sand on the beach was so hot you couldn't walk on it & my first trip to canada to visit family where i ended up sunburnt & wore long sleeves for the rest of the holiday

I remember being pregnant with my first son and my feet swelling so much in the heat i couldnt wear shoes. I also remember the evening it started to rain, we ran out into the garden along with our neighbours either side and just stood in the downpour that came, it was fantastic!!!!

Oh I remember this because of not only the heat but our school changed the hours!!!

We went into school earlier, had shorter breaks and were able to leave by 1.30! I remember spending days in the afternoon on the beach with my friends

I remember my son, born in January, with his chubby brown legs, in his pram with a parasol on. He still turns golden brown at the sight of the sun!

I remember sweltering hot nights in London and the storm that broke the heatwave. We went running out into the street getting absolutely soaked and screaming with joy at the rain. I was about 24.

I was 15 and remember a picture of a dried up reservoir on the TV which made me feel worried. I remember looking at the dried up grass in the fields on the journey to School from our village. And I genuinely do remember water rationing and having to collect water from a public standpipe up the road. We used to fill our bath with water when the water was back on. No doubt most other people did too!

It was the summer I married. Driving the length of England to our new home we were completely shocked at the visible effects of the extended drought on the landscape. Hundreds of miles of scorched earth!

Best summer ever though flowers and garden were ruined

Yes I do I was 12 years old my mother had made lots of ice lollys for us and pit them in the freezer but it was a great summer I went pea picking and remember jumping in the hay bales
