In our latest competition with Orion, we're giving you the chance to win a £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits by number one bestselling author Laura Barnett, a story about the power of reflection and how much our memories mean to us.

If you could choose just 16 moments to define your entire life, what would they be? That’s what Cass Wheeler must do. A musician born in 1950, Cass is now taking one day to select the 16 songs in her repertoire that have meant the most to her.

And behind each song lies a story - from the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate first love, to the moment she lost everything. The dreams, the failures, the second chances.

So, what are the songs that mean the most to you, and evoke your most precious memories? Perhaps it was the first dance at your wedding, or the song repeated on the radio throughout your first holiday, or the only music that would rock your baby to sleep. Tell us in the comments below for the chance to win an £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits! We also have 25 copies of the book for runners-up.

Greatest Hits is published by W&N, an imprint of Orion, and is available online and from all good booksellers.

Please post your entries below by 11am 16 April.

Usual T&Cs apply.

Here Comes The Sun by the Beatles - there is something about the melody and the story it tells. To be honest it sums up how I am feeling right now!

Penny Lane by the Beatles. It always brings back memories of carefree sunny days as a teenager.

My song is Summer Highland Falls by Billy Joel, it just seems to say it all about life and relationships and how similar couples can be with one another. To me it's a very truthful honest song and one of his best!

I used to dance to Young Hearts Run Free by Candi Staton. As a teenager. Never really listening to the words properly. Later on after an awful marriage, I realised how poignant the lyrics were. And vowed to make my daughter a strong independent woman. I hope I have.

La Bamba - this song seems to have followed my husband and me wherever we have been holidaying in the world and, where we didn't hear it, my husband asked for it to be played. It means even more to me now as my husband has just been diagnosed with terminal cancer.

In The Air Tonight - Phil Collins

Brings back memories of a very young Phil Collins drumming & the drumming gorilla advertisement .

Seeing a very young Phil Collins (before fame) playing drums with Gaynor Jones singing The Night Has A Thousand Eyes at a Barbara Speke Stage School show in Acton in 1966.

The drumming gorilla in the Cadbury’s advertisement drumming to In The Air Tonight.

Those two memories come into my head every time I hear the first couple of bars.

1,2,3 by Len Barry. It was a big hit as I was leaving home at 17 providing the backdrop to my freedom away from the most boring village on earth. The same village that I would give so much for to return now I can see that it was actually a very beautiful village.

Sorry to be miserable, but as much as I love listening to music I never have favourite tunes or songs that mean so much to me, I just like a good eclectic mix .

josiew Tue 20-Mar-18 16:19:28

There are many, but the earliest was the first record my then boyfriend bought for my birthday, Woman in Love by Frankie Laine. I also love REM Everybody Hurts, which reminds me of my late husband. His favourite was Nat King Cole singing When I Fall in Love. I hear it most days on TV as it is the theme of an advert.it always makes me smile.

Leah50 Tue 20-Mar-18 16:13:15

Reach Out I'll Be There by the Four Tops....about the only song from our dating days we could agree on, he's 10 years older than me and loved the crooners from the 1950's. I couldn't stand them, I liked bands from the 60's.

Rich1e Tue 20-Mar-18 16:04:09

Katherine Jenkins singing 'Till there was you' was played at our wedding. Not only did we love it but the people officiating at the wedding loved it too. It is still our favourite and always will be.
