In our latest competition with Orion, we're giving you the chance to win a £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits by number one bestselling author Laura Barnett, a story about the power of reflection and how much our memories mean to us.

If you could choose just 16 moments to define your entire life, what would they be? That’s what Cass Wheeler must do. A musician born in 1950, Cass is now taking one day to select the 16 songs in her repertoire that have meant the most to her.

And behind each song lies a story - from the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate first love, to the moment she lost everything. The dreams, the failures, the second chances.

So, what are the songs that mean the most to you, and evoke your most precious memories? Perhaps it was the first dance at your wedding, or the song repeated on the radio throughout your first holiday, or the only music that would rock your baby to sleep. Tell us in the comments below for the chance to win an £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits! We also have 25 copies of the book for runners-up.

Greatest Hits is published by W&N, an imprint of Orion, and is available online and from all good booksellers.

Please post your entries below by 11am 16 April.

Usual T&Cs apply.

K-K-K-Katy brings back precious memories of my grandma - she changed the name to Kristy (me) and used to sing the chorus to this song to me all the time! Strangely enough - my DD is Catherine but we all call her Katie..

I always smile and wince when Love Hurts by Cher comes on the radio, as it was playing on my mixed tape as I gave birth!!

Ally Bally Ally Bally Bee. My children loved it...my grandchildren too...and I've loved singing it to them.
I'll try to put a link below. If that doesn't work, there are lots of versions on You tube.

'More than Words' by Extreme is one of my all time favourites. My late husband bought it for me many years ago for Christmas and I played it continually. It still gets me all emotional...

Elvis Presley's 'I can't help falling in love with you' - means an awful lot to me because it is the song that was playing in the background when my partner of 10 years proposed to me at Christmas =)

Kate Meluha singing The closest thing to crazy takes me instantly back to meeting my husband. We were both widows and in our 50s thinking we had had the best in life. We met and couldn't believe that we had a chance of happiness again..14 years later we are still together despite life still throwing challenges our way. The song still takes me back to those first few months when we played the song constantly and of course had it at our wedding.

Our song is Heaven by Bryan Adams. We went to see him and as the song went on, my ‘not at the time but eventually became’ husband’s hand tightened around mine and it was one of the loveliest moments. When I hear the intro to that song, I go all weak at the knees

Parsleywin Sat 17-Mar-18 17:56:33

Suzanne, by Leonard Cohen. I was young and so very, very in love!?

easter1965 Sat 17-Mar-18 17:43:26

Frank Sinatra's My Way. My dad always sang it at home, in the pubs in fact everywhere, he loved frank and had all his albums on vinyl and every time I hear the song it brings back memories of my dear dad

Lclaytonuk555 Sat 17-Mar-18 17:30:54

It has to be David Gray’s Sail Away - it came out when I first met my OH and we played it at our wedding

Scooty413 Sat 17-Mar-18 17:27:54

Whitney Houston 'I want to dance with somebody' was the song playing when I met my husband (now ex) Nickelback 'How you remind me' is my divorce song! The Snowman 'Walking in the air' is my older son's song and Winnie-the-Pooh 'How cold my toes, tiddly pom' is my younger son's song. Its funny how diverse they all are!

Bengo2005 Sat 17-Mar-18 17:20:50

Arthur’s Theme (Best That You Can Do) by Christopher Cross is our song and has been since our courting days

Venus Sat 17-Mar-18 16:57:11

The song I treasure most is Stardust. It was my late husband's favourite song and whenever we walked into a certain hotel, the pianist would strike up that tune.

Now he has gone, the pianist said that when he plays that song, he will always think of him.

When I hear it now, it brings tears to my eyes.

Angelwings Sat 17-Mar-18 16:54:01

Phil Phillips Sea of Love was the first dance at our wedding. My husband was absolutely petrified of stepping on my feet in front of everyone but when it came to it, he did fantastically and really enjoyed himself. It was a really special moment for us both.

mollymockford Sat 17-Mar-18 16:49:12

First, the Beatles' "She Loves You" - sitting beside John Lennon in his uncle's car, when he said that he didn't think the record would sell a million!

Later, having lost a dear friend to suicide, James Taylor's "Fire and Rain".

And last and best of all, Nat 'King' Cole's "Unforgettable" was our song for my husband and me, while we were getting together.

Purpledaffodil Sat 17-Mar-18 16:44:54

So many to choose from. Twist and Shout by the Beatles reminds me of lunchtime discos in the hall at my all girls school. It was a rare treat and I remember hanging my head down so that my very long hair fell over my face as I twisted and shouted?Oh to be 15 again!

Yvonne1954 Sat 17-Mar-18 16:42:50

Definitely the theme tune from that great TV series Hill Street Blues We used to watch this together early on in our relationship when we were" like ships in the night "as we both worked shifts at Heathrow Airport and time together was special .
The other song is Just The Way You Are by Billy Joel. Still think this song and words say what it means about my lovely hubby Andrew as we celebrate our 40th Wedding Anniversary this year :-)

Coach Sat 17-Mar-18 16:41:15

naomi007 Sat 17-Mar-18 16:15:43
