In our latest competition with Orion, we're giving you the chance to win a £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits by number one bestselling author Laura Barnett, a story about the power of reflection and how much our memories mean to us.

If you could choose just 16 moments to define your entire life, what would they be? That’s what Cass Wheeler must do. A musician born in 1950, Cass is now taking one day to select the 16 songs in her repertoire that have meant the most to her.

And behind each song lies a story - from the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate first love, to the moment she lost everything. The dreams, the failures, the second chances.

So, what are the songs that mean the most to you, and evoke your most precious memories? Perhaps it was the first dance at your wedding, or the song repeated on the radio throughout your first holiday, or the only music that would rock your baby to sleep. Tell us in the comments below for the chance to win an £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits! We also have 25 copies of the book for runners-up.

Greatest Hits is published by W&N, an imprint of Orion, and is available online and from all good booksellers.

Please post your entries below by 11am 16 April.

Usual T&Cs apply.

Anything by Elvis brings back happy memories of family time with my Grandparents - even more important since they've passed away...

Some Might Say by Oasis as it reminds me of when I met my husband. Still our favourite song,

The first 78 rpm record I bought was Elvis Presley's 'Hound Dog', and that evokes happy memories.

When my husband and I were 'courting' we always had Queen songs blasting out as we drove along. I Want To Break Free and Radio GaGa were favourites at that time.

My son as a todder, loved 'Puff, the Magic Dragon' and we were always playing that.

Happy memories!

Truly, Madly, Deeply by Savage Garden which always reminds me of my son who sadly passed away with muscular dystrophy.

The theme tune to "Only Fools and Horses"! When my son was born my head was all over the place so as I was rocking him the only thing I could think of was that theme tune! smile) ...."You take your suitcase from the van...." smile))))

I liked the song Everything I do I do it for you by Bryan Adams - it was the song we danced to at our wedding and seemed very appropriate. Whenever I hear it it brings back memories of that special day 20 years ago which was the hottest day of that year!

When I was pregnant with our third child I had a scan that told me that after two girls I was carrying a boy. However, my husband was adament that he didn't want to know what the sex of our baby was so I told no one. So my song from then was "Let's hear it for the boy" by Deniece Williams and every time I heard it I would hug to myself the happy news that we were going to have a son. A very happy memory indeed!!

My dad was a big opera fan so my childhood memories are full of Verdi etc. Celeste Aida is a particular favourite still.
Teenage years were full of 60s music, my boyfriend (now my husband of almost 49 years used to sing “ Till there was you” to me, he was trying to be romantic but he always got the words wrong!
So many more songs from later eras of my life hold special memories too, I have very eclectic taste. Music is so evocative and my life would be poorer without it.

Rule the World by Take That, it was our wedding song and it always reminds me of Christmas too.

Simon and Garfunkel’s The Boxer, this was being played in every disco when out with boyfriend ( who became DH) in the late 1960’s.Feeling happy and full of life!
Earlier than that, sitting in my best friend’s house laughing and playing records especially The Beatles Norwegian Wood.Feeling young and carefree.
Much earlier than that, listening to a song on the radio called Magic Moments (Dave King?Dean Martin?) around 1957 possibly, and thinking this is the last song I will hear in this house. The next day we moved to a new house and our Father vanished from our lives.
Even earlier, 1954 singing, enthusiastically at a birthday party She wears Red Feathers by Guy Mitchell.I won a small
Prize and knew competitiveness for the first time!

My teenage love was sent away for work training for a year when we had just left school - far away - to Germany from South Africa. Unbeknown to me, he arranged for his mother to send me a copy of Happy Together by The Turtles for my birthday that year. Our romance didn't last the separation (it was me, not him) but whenever I hear that song, I think of him and how happy we were together. smile

Imagine me and you, I do, I think about you day and night, it's only right ... such an innocent song.

BBbevan Fri 16-Mar-18 20:12:03

My favourite I think is 'Dream' by the Everly Brothers. I loved it when I was a teenager and sang it to my DCs and DGC when they needed to be sung to sleep.

Jeanie1 Fri 16-Mar-18 19:24:46

Tears of a clown at the first youth club disco I ever went to - this shy 15year old became a Diva!!

Tippy22 Fri 16-Mar-18 18:34:30

I can't take my eyes off you by Andy Williams - the first time a boy asked me to dance. Karma chameleon - the only song that would help my daughter to sleep.

shaunheathcote Fri 16-Mar-18 18:10:46

I have 2 , Hush little baby, i use to sing it to all the kids when they were upset and it would always quite them down and my wedding song Nothings gonna change my love for you seemed very fitting.

Auntieflo Fri 16-Mar-18 17:48:31

Two first two pieces of music that stopped me in my tracks, are the duet from The Pearl Fishers, with Jussi Bjorling and Robert Merrill, and Louis Armstrong singing What a Wonderful Word. Then our daughter was born at home to the adagio movement of Brahms violin concerto, played by Christine Ferras. Apologies if the spellings are incorrect.

As I was feeling very despondent during a break in my final exams, I was walking down the street when a song wafted up from a basement flat. It was Sinatra's 'You make me feel so young' which lightened my mood and made me believe I wasn't doing so badly after all.

Moocow Fri 16-Mar-18 17:29:54

Difficult as so many are very personal, off to think !

TwiceAsNice Fri 16-Mar-18 17:29:10

Distant Drums by Jim Reeves was my fathers favourite song. I only have to hear it to think of him. I love Bright Eyes and Bridge over Troubled Water both by Simon and Garfunkel. Beautiful music but it makes me sad.
