In our latest competition with Orion, we're giving you the chance to win a £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits by number one bestselling author Laura Barnett, a story about the power of reflection and how much our memories mean to us.

If you could choose just 16 moments to define your entire life, what would they be? That’s what Cass Wheeler must do. A musician born in 1950, Cass is now taking one day to select the 16 songs in her repertoire that have meant the most to her.

And behind each song lies a story - from the day her mother abandoned her, to her passionate first love, to the moment she lost everything. The dreams, the failures, the second chances.

So, what are the songs that mean the most to you, and evoke your most precious memories? Perhaps it was the first dance at your wedding, or the song repeated on the radio throughout your first holiday, or the only music that would rock your baby to sleep. Tell us in the comments below for the chance to win an £100 Waitrose voucher and a copy of Greatest Hits! We also have 25 copies of the book for runners-up.

Greatest Hits is published by W&N, an imprint of Orion, and is available online and from all good booksellers.

Please post your entries below by 11am 16 April.

Usual T&Cs apply.

Everything I do I do it for you from Robin Hood Prince of Thieves - I always have a laugh because people sometimes confuse it with the tv series tune - Robin Hood Robin Hood riding through the glen ! So two memories one sentimental the other a giggle lol

Truly, Madly, Deeply. The words to my life story. Our song when we met, our wedding song and sadly the song I said goodbye to my husband with at his funeral last year after he died from myeloma complications. A poignant song if ever there was.

Whenever I hear Pinball Wizard it reminds me of my first pub get togethers, when of course I was 18! Heard it through the grapevine, first boyfriend with a motorbike and Where do you go to my lovely, first job and new friends.

The Snake by Al Wilson. This was the first dance at our wedding. There was a bar by where we lived that had a DJ on Sunday afternoons. As I had asked for the Snake that often, he started to play it whenever we walked in so we always associated it with that period when we were engaged.

My daughter as a baby was sung to sleep 'Hush little baby', such a soothing song. Metallica's Nothing Else Matters brings back memories of first love. Also Dido white flag which my current partner liked when we first met and I used to listen to it. I also listen to Sting Fields of Gold as we chose that for my Nans funeral a few months back.

Upside Down by Jack Johnson means so much to me, not that I can listen to it without crying. It was the song we played at my baby girl's funeral. To create some sort of link we had Better Together by Jack Johnson as our first dance song at our wedding a couple of years later.

I have 2 songs that can always make me smile. Night Owl by Gerry Rafferty always takes me back to my childhood. Sitting in the 'best lounge' as an 11 year old facing all the trauma that age brings! My 2nd song is Three Little Birds by Bob Marley. I listened & sang this a lot when I was pregnant with my daughter and when she was born it always settled her. I now sing it to my beautiful granddaughter who brings so much love to my life now.

When I need Love by Leo Sayer was appropriate for us since hubby worked overseas before and after we were married. First dance at our wedding. Recently while out in a bar, daughter asked what was our 'song'. I thought it was too soppy to say so I joked about it saying if we had one, we had probably forgotten by now. Hubby popped off, toilet trip I thought, and about 10 mins later the singer sang it as a request. Time stopped! Music is connected to the heart!
Also, as a child, my dad used to sing 'A Scottish Soldier' to me and despite him passing on 40 years ago, I just need to catch a phrase from it and I feel I'm sitting on his knee with him singing in my ear again. Powerful.

Peggy Sue By Buddy Holly brings back great memories of road trips and summer holidays when my parents would play The Greatest Hits Of Buddy Holly & The Crickets in the car on our journey with 3 kids in the back singing along ?

Perfect by Ed Sheeran

For me, Love Me Tender by the King - Elvis Presley. Still is my all time favourite back when I became a teenager in the early 1960s and discovered the timeless music of rock n roll. So privileged to have been a teenager at that Golden Era of legendary music that still goes on today, over 50 years later.

The Great Beyond by REM was played constantly on the radio when my eldest was born, even now when I hear it, I remember back to my precious time with my first born.

Great Balls of Fire by Jerry Lee Lewis ... my then girlfriend, now wife and I used to dance to that when we were 'in our heyday'!

Angels by Robbie Williams is my daughter's song as she was nicknamed Angel from birth

Bridge over Trouble Waters by Paul Simon. My dad died very suddenly and it was playing as I pulled up at my Mum's house. The words have comforted me many times now ove the years.

We're all going on a summer holiday by Cliff Richard - reminds me of family holidays driving down to Devon - we didn't own a car so had to hire one for the week!

Donnylover Wed 04-Apr-18 06:03:21

Without You by Nilson. All about growing up in the 70's. This record meant so much to me and even now is still my all time favourite song.

gizmos12 Wed 04-Apr-18 04:30:17

This has to be Sex Pistols Anarchy in the UK as at the age of 14 music was dull and life was going nowhere for loads of teenagers and punk sparked life into music and everyday living and if you look back a lot of bands were inspired by Sex Pistols even if they were not punk bands

First date with my partner when we heard piped music in a restaurant playing Beyond the Sea/LA MER a beautiful and romantic french song. Whenever I hear this song it takes me back there, over thirty years ago!

Bruno Mars- Just the way you are

This was released in 2010 the year my (now 10-year-old) daughter was first diagnosed with Leukaemia which came back in 2017 and then she underwent a Bone Marrow Transplant last September. Every time I hear this song I think of my precious little girl Zerina.

All of the songs from 'Grease' mean a lot to my Husband and I, our first date was spent watching the movie, and they have always been 'our' songs.

Healthcrazy13 Tue 03-Apr-18 21:10:58

George Michael - Careless Whisper the first dance with my boyfriend that became my husband.
