When I was a child, my favourite thing was escaping from our small and overcrowded house to explore the garden, meadows and streams of the countryside. A myriad shades of green with bright jewels of flowers. My least favourite things were scratched knees ( no jeans back then!) and coming home to have face, neck and knees scrubbed by the kitchen sink and hair roughly untangled! When my children were young my favourite memory was of camping in France – turquoise sea, hot sand and the smell of Mediterranean wild herbs. The least favourite was overtired children with sunburn! When my grandchildren were young, I have fond memories of them racing round the garden, with such energy, enthusiasm and life!
Now I am old. I look forward to the sun and light evenings, only to find I sit in the shade, the sun is too hot – and I run out of energy long before dusk! All those summers, where have they gone? Just memories, but there are still things to I look forward to. I love to see the house martins wheeling across the summer sky and I can escape to new worlds through the books by my chair.

The best thing about summer is spending sunny days with my grandchildren walking along the local riverbank. The worst thing is hayfever - pass me a tissue

My least favourite thing is hayfever. I love summer and I hate being allergic to seasonal pollen! I am finding that increasing my vitamin c intake helps a little bit, but I don't go a day without sneezing!

My favourite thing is the food - all the fresh fruit that is in season which tastes so much better than out of season fruit and which makes it much easier to make healthy choices, and also barbecue food which is not the healthiest choice but delicious!

My favourite thing about Summer?
When the schools finish, and the only timetables we have are filled with lazy days, fun days and doing what we want days!

My least favourite thing about Summer?
The feeling you have when you know the school holidays are coming to an end, and you all have to get back into the morning routine!!

My favourite thing about summer is having the back door open all day (with chain fly screen) and well into the long light evening. Living in the country side is wonderful this time of year. We have swallows zooming down and drinking from the pond, and bats at night.

The cats love wandering in and out, we can hear the birds (we have rare turtle doves) and I am always popping outside to sit and have a coffee and just enjoy it.

The worst thing is horse flies. They land sneakily and bite hard. I then have a huge painful lump come up, I have to resist scratching it.

Favourite - wearing different cotton Summer dresses and being complimented by my lovely granddaughters, saying ‘you look beautiful Nanna’. Despite my floppy upper arms and pudgey knees!

Least favourite - having to shake off all the bugs on my line dried laundry after warm days.
