When I was a child, my favourite thing was escaping from our small and overcrowded house to explore the garden, meadows and streams of the countryside. A myriad shades of green with bright jewels of flowers. My least favourite things were scratched knees ( no jeans back then!) and coming home to have face, neck and knees scrubbed by the kitchen sink and hair roughly untangled! When my children were young my favourite memory was of camping in France – turquoise sea, hot sand and the smell of Mediterranean wild herbs. The least favourite was overtired children with sunburn! When my grandchildren were young, I have fond memories of them racing round the garden, with such energy, enthusiasm and life!
Now I am old. I look forward to the sun and light evenings, only to find I sit in the shade, the sun is too hot – and I run out of energy long before dusk! All those summers, where have they gone? Just memories, but there are still things to I look forward to. I love to see the house martins wheeling across the summer sky and I can escape to new worlds through the books by my chair.
