I loved Enid Blyton's Famous Five stories - still do!

I read Jane Eyre from an early age and adored the romance of it. It is still my favourite book.

Heidi was my favorite as a child. I loved the character, and the story of her going to live with her grandfather in the mountains. She had great spirit and I wanted to be like her so much.

I'd love to say The Iliad by Homer but seriously it was Richmal Crompton's William series (and I've only just realised that Richmal was a woman), so very funny and apt during that period of time and just a little more non-PC than Enid Blyton's Famous Five series.
Later on I used to love reading The Hungry Caterpillar to my children, and sneaking a read of the Harry Potter series

I loved reading the Water Babies as a child a book that still entrances me today

Our teacher had his own book that he used in school, and it was about a circus the antics the children got up to. It was fantastic a very old green hard backed book
My own love was the famous five, oh I couldnt get enough of them, I still have some now. I was talking about them and he went out and bought me a pack of 5 books, with a Enjoy your only young once, Which I thought was lovely

It has to be Masha by Mara Kay. The story had me hooked from page one. Her experiences at school in Russia only
strengthened her for the future.

Black Beauty would be my choice. I have clear memories of sitting under the dining table in floods of tears aged 7 but reading and rereading this wonderful story.

I loved What Katy Did and What Katy Did Next!

I read and reread Little Women by Louisa May Alcott. Although highlighting the bleak times of war, the warmth and love and everyday experiences of the March family was captivating to read. The love of the 4 daughters for their hardworking mother was captivated by the things that they did. I still love this book to this day!!

I loved the Enid Blyton Adventure Series

mumofmadboys Sat 25-Aug-18 20:29:35

Mallory Towers for me too! I also thought I wanted to go to boarding school!

creativeness Sat 25-Aug-18 20:21:39

I loved all the classics especially Heidi by Johana Spyri which I took comfort from as aged 6 I had been sent to stay with paternal grandmother near Bournemouth miles away from family as mum was due to have my baby sister & it was a great distraction from everything

midi1975 Sat 25-Aug-18 20:15:14

I loved the 'Green Knowe' books by Lucy M.Boston. I found them different to other books I had read. I still have them.

SHORTMAN Sat 25-Aug-18 20:08:32

Anything by Enid Blyton - The Faraway Tree, Famous Five, Secret Seven, Mallory Towers but basically I would read anything I could get my hands on - we didn't have a local library - what I would have given to have a Kindle then!

hannafore Sat 25-Aug-18 19:33:38

I loved the Nancy Drew Mysteries. Nancy Drew was a great role model and i loved the fact that she could drive and she always had friends that could get her out of dangerous situations. She had red hair like me too!

Paul2706 Sat 25-Aug-18 19:15:41

For me it has to be the classic Tom Brown's schooldays for its time it was very thought provoking

Cherrytree59 Sat 25-Aug-18 19:06:02

I think I have read and enjoyed virtually every book mentioned from which I struggle to find a favourite.
A much treasured possession is my grandfather's copy of Call of the wild by Jack London.
There is a large bite out of one corner by his family dog!
Luckily still readable.
So this is my all time favourite book.

Fattypuffs & Thinnifers by Andre Maurois
I read it until the pages fell out when I was very young in the early 50's. I have found out since that it was a translation of a French book. I loved it so much.

bumblebee Sat 25-Aug-18 18:24:36

There has been so many loved books from my childhood. Thinking back now, I have warm memories reading 'The Lion, The Witch & The Wardrobe' of the Narnia Chronicles, Alfred Hitchcock & The 3 Investigators in ''The Mystery Of the Moaning Cave' and Enid Blyton's "The Secret Of Cliff Castle".

Absolutely brilliant books containing stories that kept you on the edge of your seat, and guessing until the end.

henbane Sat 25-Aug-18 18:20:25

Marianne Dreams, by Catherine Storr. I'm not sure why, but I borrowed a copy when it first came out and have always remembered it. A few years ago I found a copy online and reread it.

I've always liked the idea of pictures coming to life, I loved Harold & the Purple Crayon too.

beckyinman Sat 25-Aug-18 18:08:06

Anything by Roald Dahl - but in particular Fantastic Mr Fox

Miriam Sat 25-Aug-18 17:45:04

I loved The Folk of the Faraway Tree and read it time and time again. I still have a copy now. I loved all the characters, Moonface, Connie etc, pure escapism

Tryfan12 Sat 25-Aug-18 17:32:36
